These manuals are meant to help you better understand how to work with the jAlbum application. It also covers some of the more advanced features of the application, such as image filters and command line support.
The manuals show information relating to the current version of jAlbum but older versions of the pages are still accessible. To read a specific page relating to a specific version of jAlbum you need to establish the release date for that version, you can see version release dates here, for example, jAlbum 15 was released on November 18, 2017. To read the manual page for Settings/Pages you must navigate to the current page and then click on the 'History' tab just above the pages title - the 'Article' tab is selected by default. That shows the first edit of that page after November 18 2017 was 16 December 2017, click on that date link to read the version of that page. You can also see what the changes were between that page and the previous/next edit by clicking on the appropriate '(diff)' link, the changes will be highlighted for easy identification. Note, if you click on a link to another page you will be taken to the current version of that page, so you will need to select the appropriate historical edit for that page too.
jAlbum users are welcome to open a wiki account, using their jAlbum account username, and contribute to the wiki documentation. Skin developers can also host their skin's documentation here or just link to their own online documentation. Once you have created your account send an email to anca at jAlbum, he will provide write access to the wiki.
If you are looking for specific information you can use the wiki 'Search button’, on the left, to find pages where the search term is used.
At the top right of the user interface are icons for update announcements, search and help. Clicking on the help (?) icon will open the help page, for the area in use, such as settings and uploading, in your default browser
The spyglass icon which will open a search field allowing you to locate jAlbum's controls by their labels, your 'recent/My Albums' projects by their name and all files & folders within the current directory by their metadata - filename, title, comments or keyword. This search can be invoked by clicking the icon, pressing 'CTRL + SPACE' or by the menu, 'Help/Search'. There are preference settings to enable/disable the searching of files and folders.
Note, make sure any open windows are not covering the top-centre area of the main window as you may not see the resulting search entry field! Also, with the preference window open and active the keyboard shortcut CTRL + SPACE will not work.
Start to enter the search term you want to find, search results are shown as you type two or more characters. You can search using multiple partial words, for example ‘pro sam’ or ‘sam pro’ will limit the search making it easier to find the project ‘Sample Portfolio’. As soon as your target is visible then click on it or use the down/up arrow keys to move through the list and then click on it or hit 'Enter' to select it. In the example below 'vid' has been typed and the results show all of the controls including 'vid' in their labels. As can be seen, we have results for four different areas in jAlbum that have settings for videos.
Note, only project results are ordered alphabetically
For settings the appropriate setting section, which will be expanded if it is within a collapsed panel, and the target word(s) is briefly highlighted with a yellow circle. In this case the image shows the result of selecting 'Quality' setting of the 'Album settings - Video - Quality'
After a successful search the search term is selected, ready to be replaced by a new search word if required. The path to the selected setting is written to the system console (press F7 to open it) should you want to make a note of it or if you want to quickly find that setting again without having to perform the search again.
For projects, selecting a project in the results list will open that project. For files and folders they will be selected and displayed in jAlbum’s explore view.
You can use the down arrow key to bring up the results of the last search.
There is also a search icon in the 'Settings' window which will search only for controls within this window.
Note, the search function will find only 'visible' settings. For example, the video settings can be enabled or disabled in preferences, when disabled the panel will show ‘Videos - Video support is disabled. See Pref...’ and that will show in the search results. Conversely when video support is enabled the panel will show the video settings available and search results will not include ‘Videos - Video support is disabled. See Pref...’.
Holding down SHIFT ALT/OPT as one navigates to the UI setting saves a screenshot of the relevant UI window, handy for showing others the relevant settings.
