Getting "Up" link back to your web to work

JAlbum will automatically create an "Up" or "Parent" link to your web site if it finds some index pages in the parent directory of where you create an album. To be specific, JAlbum searches for files like "index.html", "index.htm", "index.asp", "index.jsp" or "index.php" in the parent directory of the output directory (album directory). If found, you will have an "Up" button generated.

If you generate an album in a location where there is no web in the parent directory and still want an "Up" link to be generated, either modify the skin you use to always add an "Up" link or add an empty "index.html" file in the parent directory of where you generate albums. Modifying the skin is simply a matter of changing
<ja:if exists="parentIndexPage">
<A HREF="$parentIndexPage"><IMG SRC="gifs/up.gif" BORDER=0 ALT="Up one level"></A>
</ja:if>
of an index.htt file to
<A HREF="../"><IMG SRC="gifs/up.gif" BORDER=0 ALT="Up one level"></A>

But then the "Up" button will only work when accessed through a web server.

David: JALbum is a great, fast program. I have made a couple albums, but I am not yet prepared to Publish to the Internet. My albums did not have an Up Arrow, causing me to exit completely after viewing the album, and I did not save the album. All your sample albums have an UP, so it is easy to try various skins, and return without saving or losing the latest album. I do not fully grasp your previous answer about the "Up" link, so I'll insert my Q's in CAPs, below:

JAlbum will automatically create an "Up" or "Parent" link to your web site if it finds some index pages in the parent directory of where you create an album.
IS AN INDEX PAGE A FILE WHICH IS A PAGE ON A WEBSITE? IF SO, I HAVE TO CREATE ONE, OR BORROW ONE?

To be specific, JAlbum searches for files like "index.html", "index.htm", "index.asp", "index.jsp" or "index.php" in the parent directory of the output directory (album directory). If found, you will have an "Up" button generated.

Yes, you'll have to create a dummy index.html file (can be empty) and put it in the parent directory, however there is another way too: Just define "parentIndexPage" (without quotes) as a user defined variable in the advanced page and set the value to "../" or "../index.html" (no quotes) or something like that (press ENTER when done entering the value!). When you generate an album, you will always have an up link with the value you set.

David-
I'm very impressed with JAlbum and now have 7 galleries on my website. I've followed your advice on this topic and found that putting a dummy index.html file in the output directory/ folder does the trick BUT only works in some browsers!
It works for me in IE5 and AOL on my W95 machine, and in Netscape 4.77 in Classic (OS9.2) on my iMac. However, in OSX10.2 on the iMac, it doesn't work in IE5.2 for Mac or in AOL for OSX: in OSX browsers it only works if you add to the skin thus:
<A HREF=index.htm/><IMG SRC="gifs/up.gif" BORDER=0 ALT="Up one level"></A>
Wierd. This depite I've done the thing you suggest with the user defined variable in the Advanced page!
Guess I'll have to go back through them all and add the <A HREF=index.htm/>. Hope this is helpful to others

I'm not at all skilled in HTML, and so I don't really understand the significance of the question, but what I've found works best is
<A HREF="/index.htm">
My web editor (HotMetal Pro 4) put the .htm on the index file, but personally I don't know my .htm from my .html !

You can control how JAlbum produces file extensions (.htm or .html etc) on the Advanced page. A "/index.htm" link will link to the very top of the website while a "../index.htm" will link one level up, "../../index.htm" will link two levels up etc
