Slow performance

Hello,
following the latest (critical) update to version 39.5.11, generating an album is taking an extremely long time.
The album consists of approximately 5,400 original, unscaled PNG photos with a resolution of 1600 by 1080 pixels, and each photo is around 5 MB in size.
Before the update: less then 3 minutes.
After the update: around 30 minutes.
To be more precise: after adding a single photo and running the "make album" command, it takes about 30 minutes to generate the album.
Skin: Tiger 8.0.5
Apart from the critical update, nothing has changed in the settings or the workflow.
Any ideas?

Have you done another make since the 30 minute make? If so how long did that take, with nothing added or changed?
Also, have a read of this blog post, https://jalbum.net/blog/entry/welcoming-jalbum-39-3/
In particular read the section on Profiling for max performance. If you get another long make album post the results of doing the above profiling. |

A new "make" doesn't make any difference; the total time is still around 30 minutes.

It looks to me, at least, that you have a lot of metadata and texts to get processed. Doesn’t seem to be image processing. Please wait for David to respond.

Seems metadata reading related.
What number of working threads do you have under Preferences->Advanced?
What kind of hard drive? An SSD? If not, building on an SSD makes a huge difference

Just a wild thought, have you used Lightroom/Photoshop etc. and embedded processing metadata in the images? That can cause seriously bloated metadata, with no useful information as regards the actual image, from a viewer perspective.

Hi Rob, David and Jeff,
To make sure the issues were related to version 39.5.11, I uninstalled that version and installed 39.4.1, and the problem no longer occurs.

What advice can you give?

I don't see anything strange or suspicious in the project settings. I'll have to leave this one to David - he'll know what changed between 39.4 and 39.5 that might explain this dramatic slowdown.

But that was only for the upload process, not for the build process. |

Yeah, I reread the release notes and added an edit that the other change was with the metadata reader library. Been a long strange day. |

Thanks for sharing these insightful screen dumps! (Note: you can use copy+paste to copy these in-text. Makes it easier for all)
Comparing the 1:st line is revealing: Getting xmp data seems MUCH slower with v39.5, where we updated the metadata-extractor library.
Can you try removing the updated "lib/metadata-extractor-2.20-main.jar" file and replacing it with "lib/metadata-extractor-2.15.0.jar" from v39.4? Now see if speed picks up again. If so, it's definitively in the library itself, otherwise it's due to some interaction change with that library.
