Deleting RAW file, if the JPG file is deleted

Hi David,
usually I have two files from a photo, the JPG file and a raw file (CR3). So navigating in jAlbum in a folder I only see the JPG files. If I decide to delete a JPG file the RAW file will remain. And that is bad.
I would like to have the ability to also delete the RAW file. I'm not sure how the user experience should be.
1) Every time I delete a JPG, jAlbum asks if the corresponding CR3 file should be deleted also.
- or -
2) There is an option under Preferences :
[ ] Delete RAW files automatically if the JPG file is deleted
[ ] Ask every time a JPG file should be deleted if the RAW file should be deleted too
What do you thing?
Thanks, Markus

Perhaps a better way to treat these would be to present a list of CR3 thumbnails having JPEG attachments? That way you won't see duplicates

But wouldn't that mean the RAW files would need to be edited as the settings used for the camera processed jpg would not be applied to the RAW file.
The general rule is still not to include in the project files having the same base name, isn't it? Maybe the Import from camera function should offer to import either RAW or jpg but not both? I assume both are being imported by Markus as that requires the minimum effort on his part.

Rob, I don't import the pictures via jAlbum. I just import them via the Windows file explorer.
I think my whole file handling differs from most (all) other users.

Does Windows not allow for automating file copying, so that only jpg images are copied from a SD card to the drive in question?
Maybe a better way of handling such a clash of files is to automatically ignore RAW files, rather than excluding them, if a processed file of the same base name is in the same folder e.g. jpg, jpeg, png, tiff etc. If a processed image is in the folder there is presumably no need for the RAW file - except for allowing a download and an excluded RAW file would not be included anyway.

Rob, I think we are still not talking about the same subject. But it's late, I'm going to bed. I'll try to write down what I really want in a different way tomorrow.

I think we're having trouble understanding why you are adding files to a project that you seem to have no intention of using to build the album. What purpose is being served by the CR3 files?

Jeff, I'm not adding them, they are there from the beginning. As I said, my workflow seems to be very different from how developers think users act.

I think we're having trouble understanding why you are adding files to a project that you seem to have no intention of using to build the album. What purpose is being served by the CR3 files?
Usual workflow at the end of a day during my trips:
1) Download pictures and videos from „Canon EOS R10“ via Windows Explorer to a folder (e.g.: „D:\Users\MDrück\Pictures\2026 01 30 Norge\2026 02 02 Östersund - Jokkmokk“).
2) Download videos from „Panasonic DMC-FZ1000“ via Windows Explorer to the folder. („…\2026 02 02 Östersund - Jokkmokk“)
3) Download videos from „DJI Mini 4 Pro“ via Windows Explorer to the folder. („…\2026 02 02 Östersund - Jokkmokk“)
4) Download GPS-Track from „Columbus GPS P-10 Pro“ via Windows Explorer to a common folder for GPX files.
5) Using „GeoSetter“ to tag the pictures with GPS positions.
6) Now I start jAlbum.
What do we have in that folder („2026 02 02 Östersund - Jokkmokk“)?
2026 02 02 Östersund - Jokkmokk 09 39.jpg {panorama}
2026 02 02 Östersund - Jokkmokk 13 19.jpg {panorama}
DJI_20260202120313_0001_D.MP4 {video from the drone}
DJI_20260202120313_0001_D.SRT {subtitles from the drone video}
IMG_1612.CR3 {RAW „Canon EOS R10“}
IMG_1612.JPG {JPG „Canon EOS R10“}
…
IMG_1739.CR3 {RAW „Canon EOS R10“}
IMG_1739.JPG {JPG „Canon EOS R10“}
P1380021.MP4 {video from „Panasonic DMC-FZ1000“}
…
P1380055.MP4 {video from „Panasonic DMC-FZ1000“}
7) When I'm at home again I grab the pictures for panoramas and „stitch“ them with „PanoramaStudio 4“. The generated pictures have the syntax „2026 02 02 Östersund - Jokkmokk 09 39.jpg“ (09:39 o'clock = time from the first picture)
This is the reason why I end up with JPGs and RAW files in the same folder. Right now I only use the JPGs, the RAW files are for later use in the future.
The folder („2026 02 02 Östersund - Jokkmokk“) I'm talking about here is my „input“ folder for jAlbum. This is where I give every object a comment, a title and key words.
But when I delete a JPG file in jAlbum I would like jAlbum to delete the RAW file also.

Hello,
Here's an idea that could be a source of inspiration for this topic.
In NX Studio (Nikon software), a button in the toolbar allows you to display JPG + RAW pairs either as a single icon or as two separate files. When the JPG + RAW files are grouped, deleting them removes the pair, and when they are separate, deleting only the selected file.
Obviously, in grouped display, an edit is applied to the raw file (that's the purpose of the software). If we applied this to jAlbum, we would have to decide whether the editing applies to the RAW or the JPEG (I prefer the latter).
My two cents...

1) Download pictures and videos from „Canon EOS R10“ via Windows Explorer to a folder (e.g.: „D:\Users\MDrück\Pictures\2026 01 30 Norge\2026 02 02 Östersund - Jokkmokk“).
Stop right there. Create a sibling folder called D:\Users\MDrück\Pictures\2026 01 30 Norge\2026 02 02 Östersund - Jokkmokk-RAW. In File Explorer, sort the images in D:\Users\MDrück\Pictures\2026 01 30 Norge\2026 02 02 Östersund - Jokkmokk by type, and move the CR3 files to the sibling RAW folder.
Now move on to the remaining steps.
... the RAW files are for later use in the future.
If after one year of "the future" you discover that you have never had occasion to make use of the RAW files, dump all of them. If you haven't needed them in a year, you never will. After doing that a few times, you might realize that there's no reason to have your camera record them, either, and you'll set the camera to record only the highest quality JPG's it can.
I went through a similar exercise about a year ago. I was still carefully preserving the original JPG's for everything, even though I had used only a portion of them for the family and travels albums. I finally just deleted all of them - I was never going to go back to them, and my heirs would just hit the DEL button, anyway. So I've saved only the jAlbum project files, which contain the originals that were good enough to use in the album.

Somewhat off-topic, but I recommend a little utility app called Namexif. It gets rid of the uninformative names supplied by the camera, like IMG_3728,JPG, and replaces the file name with the EXIF date, like 2026-04-08 13.24.35.JPG. They'll still sort chronologically, just like the original names, but now you can tell when they were recorded without having to poke around in file properties. The app also lets you time-shift the dates, if you have time zone problems.
The app also works on videos, but it's very, very slow, because videos don't contain the same type of easily-retrieved timestamp information. Feed them to the app, then go make tea while you're waiting.
ETA: The app is for Windows only.
