WebP will be phased-out, but I think it's good not to rush it. Now we warn, for a few more months at least.

Talking about image formats... what do you think about JPEG XL?

Not happening in my lifetime.

Browser support is obviously the biggest drawback right now, but that may change quickly if/when Chrome supports it. It's currently supported via a switch (enable-jxl). What's appealing is 10x faster encoding time vs AVIF.

That would be a good thing, but it's not just browser support.

Blank thumbnail in File Explorer¹, suspiciously slow loading in paint.net (which tells me that it's struggling with it), Photoshop requires a plugin which hasn't gotten high marks from users, and so on.

AVIF has some similar problems, though not quite as bad.

When app developers plant this stuff in optional plugins, that suggests that they don't think there's enough demand for it and/or they're not very confident in the way they're handling the format.

Let me know when all of the Chromium browsers, plus Firefox, all support it, along with all common mobile browsers. Until then....

¹I just installed the optional plug in for File Explorer and Photos, and it seems to be OK.

We'll follow the progress. By now I anyway feel confident that we can put together a Java wrapper around JPEG XL in case Chrome decides to support it officially.
