I last uploaded my website a few weeks ago all fine but a few days ago I went through same process but jalbum said i needed to change the FTP type. If I left it on FTP it wouldnt connect to my hosting service.
The only one that would connect was FTP over explicit.
But after I connect it then takes absolutely ages to work out the album size then when that goes through and I say OK upload it will upload for about 2 seconds then error with the attached.

I sent this to my hosting service and they said as its connecting and uploading some files they think the issue is with jalbum. I was on v35 so i updated to the last version and its doing the same thing.
Can anyone help?

Ask your web host if they support SFTP and if so, what port number you should use.

They told me this
"Hi,
Please use the FTP protocol, on port 21, but simply make sure to use "TLS/SSL Explicit encryption" for the "Encryption" option (as in the attached screenshot).
It should work properly if you set it up like that in your FTP client."

In the current version of jAlbum, there are two FTPES protocols available. Whichever one you're using now, try the other one.

But at the same time, start looking for another web host, one that inhabits the 21st Century along with the rest of us. Even my plain vanilla bargain web host offers SFTP, without any messing around. It's enabled by default (along with https for my web pages).

My web host has said this about SFTP.

"Hi Pete,
SFTP works over SSH, and SSH is disabled on our shared server as it poses serious security concerns.
Regards,
"

So who is correct? Jalbum saying use sftp or my webhost who says its a serious security concern?

The "S" in SFTP stands for "secure." It encrypts all of the traffic. SSH stands for "secure shell."

SSH is a security problem only if it's misconfigured.

Almost all U.S. hosts offer SFTP, many by default, and the rest requiring you to enable SSH for your account (usually a 30-second cPanel fiddle). jAlbum hosting operates only over SFTP - no other protocol is available. None of them seems to be having any trouble with it.

SFTP (and SCP) is sort of part of SSH, but that doesn't mean you have to have full SSH command executable rights to use SFTP. We're using SFTP for our hosting but there is no SSH command terminal to login to that potentially can be a security concern. So it's perfectly safe.

Please see if you can have the tech people at your host contact us (support@jalbum.net). This problem must be related to some setting they've changed (software update etc). Knowing what has changed in their end will cut time for us in the debugging process.

...Or just change to any web host that supports the superior SFTP protocol.
