Confused about .info files

I spent a whole bunch of time yesterday adding keywords to the pictures in an album. I also added ${keywords} to the Settings->Tiger->Lightbox->Caption so that I could see those keywords in the built album.
When I built the album I could see that the keywords that I had put there were not shown. The keywords that were shown were the ones that I had put on a very few pictures some while ago.

After much searching I discovered that the keywords had been correctly written to the jpg files but were not written to the associated .info file of each picture in the .jalbum folder.

The build process seems to use the keywords from the .info files in preference to the ones in the XMP dc.subject fields of the the associated JPG file.. So that was why it was only showing some previously entered keywords. I deleted all of the .info files and, magically, all of the correct keywords from the JPG files were shown in the built album. I also notice that the .info files have not (yet) been rewritten with the up-to-date keywords.

So a number of questions spring to mind... How can this have happened? When are .info files written? Why does Jalbum write keywords to the JPG files and not to the .info files? Have I missed a setting somewhere?

Any information gratefully received.

Just did some quick simple tests, and it appears to be working as designed. Existing keywords in the XMP fields of the JPG's are fetched, and newly-entered keywords are added to them. And both old and new are showing up in the XMP fields and the .info files.

I then tried some combinations of starting conditions, like an image with an .info file but no XMP entry, and vice-versa, and it simply got it right every time. Each image ended up with both old and new keywords in the XMP and the .info file.

In short, I haven't been able to trip it up, at least so far.

A few thoughts, in no particular order.

Under Tools > Preferences > General > Image editing, make sure that Write xmp metadata to files is selected.

When you're entering keywords, with Keywords selected as the view (at upper right), you should be seeing every keyword that's being detected for each image in its Explorer view caption.

While entering keywords, are you seeing any error messages in the console? If there are any, you'll see a warning triangle at lower right.

ETA: And under Settings > Advanced > Metadata, make sure that Include photographic data in generated pages (the first checkbox in that lower section) is checked. No need to include it in the generated images, which tends to cause problems.

Hmmm... Thank-you very much for having a look at helping me.

I have just checked and I can see that in Tools > Preferences > General > Image editing, "Write xmp metadata to files" is selected. However, after deleting all of the .info files and then subsequently making changes to the keywords in a few files, there are no new .info files being created.

I think I have just found something significant... The way that I have been adding the keywords to the images is through the Single image view->Description->Keywords GUI field. It seems that method of adding them does not write to the .info files. Whereas editing them through the folder view in Keywords mode does.

Does that help narrow down the problem?

Bingo! That looks like a bug.

Keywords entered in that field are being added to the XMP metadata, but not to the .info file. This creates a weird conflict, in which the non-updated .info file is overriding the XMP metadata in the file. And indeed, if you delete the .info file, the XMP metadata reappears. But a new .info file for that image isn't being created unless you then add yet another keyword, but by entering it under the image thumbnail. All very tangled.

I'll move this thread to Bug reports.

David, the quick demo: set Explore to show keywords. Enter "KW1" for the image. Now open the image for editing and under Description > Keywords, add ",KW2" to the list. Now come back to the Explore view - the "KW2" has vanished.

OK... That, at least, shows that I am not losing my mind!

I had been aware of the Keywords mode in the folder view but for some reason I didn't use it when doing my stuff yesterday. I shall switch to that method for future work but it would be good if it were fixed in future versions of jAlbum.

Thanks for your help.

The jury is still out on that one. ;)

Sorry for the confusion caused. The "Description" property panel of the Edit view has only been writing XMP properties to files, but jAlbum's Explore view has a mixed model. I guess .info files should ideally only be written if jAlbum can't write XMP properties (some file formats don't allow XMP embedding through the libraries we use). Alternatively I could modify the "Description" property panel to also update the .info files, but I think it's cleaner to only update the .info files as a fallback in cases where jAlbum fails to write the XMP properties.

Nice theory, but in practice, it's a bit of a mess.

Add an image. Enter a keyword of KW1 in the Explore view. Now enter an additional keyword in the Description panel, so it reads KW1, KW2. Now look at what's displayed under the thumbnail. Only the first keyword is showing up. The second one has vanished completely.

There is no setting that will get KW2 to show up as one of the keywords.

ETA: If you do all of your keyword entry either under the thumbnails in the Explore view, or on the Description panel, you're safe. But mixing the two entry methods results in missing keywords, no matter what you do.

Here's a radical idea: take keywords out of the Description panel. Leave only the Explore view as the place to enter them. That's more full-featured, anyway. One location, no conflicts.

There is also the ‘Details’ view, where one can include keywords, maybe that too is affected by this bug?

It might be useful to see the keywords in the Description panel, but why not read-only in this case?

Entering in the Details view works fine, so it's only the Description entry that's wonky. All the more reason to remove it, rather than jump through coding hoops to fix it. :)

Might be a little weird, since the other fields in that panel are all editable.
