Moving from Windows 7 to Windows 11

I have finally made the move to Windows 11 from Windows 7. Many people here have urged me to do so as a way to solve the problems I've been encountering on my old set up. I transferred the "My Albums" folder to the new computer thinking that the new Jalbum would recognize it and allow me to continue using my current templates, galleries and other settings so I could just get to work. Of course, I was wrong. After doing a search on the Jalbum website, I found a tutorial that said I needed to transfer my configuration folder as well, before I downloaded the Jalbum program. So, now I'm reconciled to deleting my new version of Jalbum and downloading the configuration folder first before trying again. Hopefully, this will allow the program to find my albums, but the tutorial was unclear about where I can find this configuration file. I tried pressing command/control/c as suggested in the tutorial to find its location on my old computer, but nothing popped up. Does anybody have any guidance on this topic? Thanks...

The correct keyboard shortcut is SHIFT+Control+C for windows.

Let me know the full path and I will update the wiki to show that too.

You don’t need to delete and reinstall jAlbum, just replace the configuration folder the new machine with that from the old one. Then start jAlbum and your old setup will be there.

Paths to the configuration folder now shown for both Mac and Windows.

Just make sure jAlbum isn't running when you replace the files. Shut down jAlbum, replace the files, then launch it again.

The wiki entry in question:

https://jalbum.net/help/en/Moving_jAlbum_to_a_new_computer

You might run into one additional wrinkle. I seem to recall hitting this when I moved from Win7 to Win10, and there's no easy way to address it. The problem was that my username on the Win7 machine was JT, while my username on the Win10 machine was jefft. This meant that all the full paths in the files were wrong. It's not just the config files, like projects.txt, that were now pointing to a nonexistent place - the individual project files, the .jap files, were also affected.

jAlbum is self-healing in some respects, but depending upon how you had things set up, it gets confused. If, for example, your projects send their output to somewhere other than an album subfolder of the project, jAlbum gets lost. The output directory doesn't exist on your new PC, and you don't really want it be created with the old path.

Windows makes it fiendishly difficult to change your username, mostly because so many things are dependent on it. I wouldn't advise venturing down that path.

I seem to recall ending up opening the config files and all of the .jap files in a text editor, and doing a global search-and-replace. It required some care, but thankfully it had to be done only once.

If you're running jAlbum 35 and above, then you don't need to dabble with the config folder in order to locate the moved projects, just ensure that the projects are moved under the "My Albums" folder on the target computer, then open jAlbum and click the "Recent projects" header to reveal a menu that let's you choose another project group. Now choose "My Albums" and all your moved projects should show up.

Another way to open a moved project within jAlbum is to drop its folder (or project file) onto jAlbum.

Thank you for your suggestion. I'm currently working with the latest version of Jalbum. I did as you suggested. It lead me to the "My Albums" option. My projects are in the same "My Albums" folder that the address path on Jalbum leads to. Two "My Albums" are listed under the Recent Projects menu but nothing happens when I click on either "My Album" . I suspect I'm doing something wrong. If you can think of something I might be doing wrong, please let me know if you have time. Otherwise, I will try the other suggestion about the config file later on tonight when I can devote some time to it. Thanks again.

So what's the path of the MyAlbums folder you've moved the project folder to and what does the tool-tip reveal if you hover the mouse over "My Albums" ?

Try repopulating the recent projects list. Ignore what's shown there. Instead, just choose File > Open Project, navigate to My Albums in your file system, open one of the project folders, and select the jalbum-settings.jap file that's in there.

The path on the hover over is C:\Users\dangh\Documents\My Albums I believe that is the same as the path on my computer, though it is hard to know for sure the way the path is displayed in Windows 11 File Explorer. Thanks again.

I’m not sure what repopulating means, but after navigating to the “My Albums” folder and opening up a project, I couldn’t find a jalbum-settings.jap file. I did try importing one of my projects through that navigation, resulting only in the name of the project name being listed under the left hand project pane, but no images in the main window. Thanks again.

If you have included the lifeboat file in your projects you can download the settings file for each project, see https://jalbum.net/help/en/Play_safe_with_jAlbum

You just need the "jalbum-settings.jap" file found inside the unzipped folder to open the project in jAlbum. Move the settings file inside the project, double click it and then do a 'Save' project'.

If you haven't included the lifeboat file search your old PC for all files starting with "jalbum-settings". Then copy them into the correct project on your new machine.

And if you are just missing images, did you use copy or link? If link then you need to copy your original images from your old PC to the new one and then double click on the broken link (red 'X' in jAlbum's explore view and navigate to the image on your new PC.

I hadn't responded yet, because I still haven't figured out how one could copy the projects from old PC to new, but leave behind the project settings files.

Unfortunately there are those that like to have all the project settings in one place, who knows where though.
