jAlbum 38 is here in an early beta.
Changes:
  • Added Apache Commons Net's ftp library - a well maintained high quality ftp library for the protocols "ftp", "ftps" and "ftpes"
  • Estimated time left now based on last 10s (uploads, background processing)
  • Fix for bug excluding images with "Hide excluded" active
  • Fix for dialogs blocking UI when sign in dialog is showing
  • Fixed rendering bug for About windows (Windows Look and feel)
  • Bundled Split skin
  • No longer re-copies originals when rebuilding albums

I've also planned to include native AVIF read+write support, but more on that later...

Appreciate if you test the Apache Commons ftp library (set connection type to Apache Commons). With my testing, "Sample Portfolio" uploads 10% faster with it, but the main point is to bundle a well maintained ftp library.

Installers:
Windows: https://jalbum.net/download/jAlbum-install.exe
Mac (Intel): https://jalbum.net/download/jAlbum.dmg
Mac (M-series): https://jalbum.net/download/jAlbum-M.dmg

The Windows installer is giving me 37.6b1, not 38b1.

Is this going to stay for external hosted users as it isn't available for jAlbum hosting?

Good question. I've been using SFTP on my own host for years, and when I tried to drop back, I discovered that my host no longer supports FTP or FTPS at all. They claim to support FTPES, but in my tests, it simply doesn't work - lots of failures (I need to poke around a bit more to try to figure out what's going on there - I suspect it has to do with the number of simultaneous transfers).

If a user's host doesn't offer SFTP, it's probably time to find a new host. It's like https vs http - if you're stuck with http, switch hosts!

Aargh! I uploaded the jAlbum-install.msi file by mistake. (Thank you Windows for hiding file extensions). Now fixed.

Yes, sftp is still the recommended protocol, and what we use for jAlbum's hosting, but I've found a few servers that require ftps or ftpes and that spits out errors during upload using ftp4j's ftps and ftpes protocols. The Apache Commons versions don't cause these errors.

Investigating these errors further reveals that it's probably some servers that don't handle encrypted data channels properly, so with Apache Common's secure protocols, we only encrypt the the control channel (where passwords are passed)

Like macOS, Windows doesn't hide file extensions if you tell it not to. ;)

I know, it's just a bad default.
