jAlbum 37.5 beta for testing
Posted: 18 Apr 25, 15:04
Happy Easter everyone! jAlbum 37.5 is just around the corner now.

Changes:
  • New "peek" feature: Simply keep the mouse pressed at an object for >0.4s and a larger closeup will show. Release mouse button to return. Now you don't need to zoom, open edit view or review view in order to quickly peek at an image. You can also use the arrow keys to quickly peek at neighbour images while peek is active.
  • New "Select excluded" function that, for instance, simplifies deletion of excluded objects
  • Review mode now has PageUp and PageDown, Home and End support, allowing users to review larger images in groups of 2 by 2, 4 by 4 or 6 by 6.
  • Add->From database improved to handle adding metadata from xml files that carry the data in attributes. (Previously we only supported data as nested elements)
  • Fixed problem with Chinese language code being incorrect (or any languages that have both language and country code in their texts file)
  • Bundled updated Tiger skin

What do you think? I'm already in love with "peek" :-)

Installers:
Windows: https://jalbum.net/download/jAlbum-install.exe
Mac (Intel): https://jalbum.net/download/jAlbum.dmg
Mac (M-series): https://jalbum.net/download/jAlbum-M.dmg

Same to you. :-)

Yes, I like it. But I would always show the closeup centered on the screen.

* New "Select excluded" function that, for instance, simplifies deletion of excluded objects

Cool.

* Review mode now has an experimental PageUp and PageDown support (not solid yet), allowing users to review larger images in groups of 2 by 2, 4 by 4 or 6 by 6.

Does not work for me. PageUp/PageDown skips to the next or previous picture.

Cheers, Markus

I'm with MarkusD on this. I like the "peek" function, but PgUp/PgDn don't see to be doing anything new. Perhaps we're not understanding how to invoke it?

Glad you like it :-)

I've polished the look a bit (added sublime borders). I frankly think it's more intuitive to have the image appear centered over the smaller thumbnail (if possible) than always in the center of the window.

The PageUp / PageDown only works if you've first shift-selected more than 1 image, then you currently need to click on one of the closeup images. This moves the keyboard focus correctly so the new PageUp / PageDown behaviour kicks in.

Hmmm, perhaps centered is better. Here's a centered version (core update).

Funny, I didn't code this explicitly, but when peeking, you can actually use the cursor keys to peek at other images as well

It also helps if you spin around three times in your desk chair while singing Land of Hope and Glory. ;)

Needs work. I'm running into a lot of what I call "edge effects," in which things get ugly when you're going through, e.g., four images at a time, but there are only two or three images left at the end. Lots of "index out of bounds" errors in the console. In some cases, I've ended up staring at a blank white screen, and had to hit ESC to get back to the thumbnails.

I'm not really sure about the use case for this. You can achieve much the same effect, at least on something the size of a Macbook, by just zooming the thumbnail display to its highest setting. Maybe on a large monitor....

Yes. Like a lightbox script, centering a large image seems more natural. Opening a modal window that's "anchored" on its thumbnail is better for things like displaying a little table of metadata. But big images seem odd when positioned that way.

b3 now available, allowing faster keyboard navigation while peeking.

I'm planning further work on PageUp / PageDown for the review mode.

I don't have page up/down keys, is there an alternative?

Presumably this is one of the issues, error on page down to the last row

Not always reproducible but click holding on a thumbnail for a long time, circa 20s, sometimes leaves the enlarged image when releasing the click. The cursor is not shown but clicking over the explore window reduces the thumbnail back to normal.

Given the long time needed to trigger this it may never be seen in real usage.

b4 now available at the beta core location.

Changes:
  • Applies filters to peeking
  • Fixed problems with page up/down navigation in review mode
  • Fixed issue with $language variables being incorrect for languages having both language and country code within the file name of the texts.properties file, for instance Chinese, having the name "texts_zh_CN.properties"
