Help with an old skin import & Favicons

Attachment skin files.jpg (42.2 KB)
Hi

Back in 2006 I had my web developers build me a jAlbum skin (in version 8 of the software) and I still have the files as can be seen in the skin files directory picture attached.

I just don't know how to 'import' or 'install' this as a skin into jAlbum.

Any help appreciated in as non-technical way as you can manage!

Separate to this, I have been trying to get different Favicons in different albums and even though I place a favicon.ico in the 'res' folder of each, I still only get one on all albums. Might be this because I am using my own top level hosting site? If so, can this be changed? I am using different skins as well.

Many thanks for looking!

First, your "skin" files include a couple of subdirectories that aren't part of a skin's coding, and shouldn't be there. The .jalbum folder would be part of a specific album project, and the album folder would be the output from a specific project. Delete them before doing anything else.

Now, launch jAlbum and choose Tools > Open directories > Config directory. You will probably see a skins folder there - this is where all self-installed skins go, including updates to the bundled skins. If it isn't there, create it.

Now create a folder under skins with the name of your skin, like WardSkin. Copy your skin files and folders into it. It should now appear on the list of available skins within jAlbum.

Having said that, the chances of a 19-year-old skin working with current jAlbum are almost zero. The internal coding requirements have substantially changed since then. I predict a fairly immediate crash when you try to make an album with it. In fact, it might even refuse to load the skin.

Favicons are handled differently by different skins, so there isn't one answer to the question of how to make them work.

In my skins, I take a consistent approach to it. You can create a res folder in the project, stash your favicon there, like wardicon.png, then tell the skin (on the Misc tab), to find the favicon at res/wardicon.png.

My skins are not bundled with jAlbum, so you have to install whichever one you want to tinker with:

Laza's skin, the bundled ones, take a very different approach. Best if you post a question about it in the forum section for the skin you're trying to use.

Heading to your skins now.

I assume favicon.ico is also good or does it need specific naming and extension?

For my skins, it'll take any file name for the favicon. These days, browsers understand .ico, .png, .jpg, and even .svg. The skin doesn't care which you use.

It's probably a design relic, anyway - non-responsive, unusable on mobiles, etc. Best to move on. :)
