I admit the quality of the software encoded version is a bit better (see the sky), and it makes a smaller file as well. Still, I think the hardware encoder is interesting.
ffmpeg does say software encoding is usually better than hardware, but increasing the bit rate will improve the quality.

File size is less important to me, as long as it is reasonably less than the original. Speed gain might not matter much to others if they make albums in the background.

Speed gain matters most, to me at least. Of course the quality is important too.

Please keep in mind that users might handle videos which are much bigger in size (>= 1GB) and much longer (>10 minutes).

So, if there is an easy way to convert videos with JA, this would be much appreciated.

Like I said in another thread recently, re-compiling all (792) my video in my "Scandinavia" album would probably take weeks.

Cheers, Markus

Just tried the hevc_videotoolbox encoder and got reduced file sizes for a slight increase in time,
The file size reduction varied but some were very significant.

hevc_videotoolbox = 1m 0.241s v 58.204s for h264_videotoolbox (3% increase but still quicker than the original time of 1m 29.117s).

Rob, did you try the AppleSilicon version of ffmpeg? It has 2x faster software encoding? If you haven't tried it yet, just delete ffmpeg from jAlbum's bin folder and let jAlbum download it again. It will now download a version specially compiled for AppleSilicon.

For all: I've updated all ffmpeg binaries for all platforms and architectures now. Now you get at least v7 (Linux) and v7.1 on Mac and Windows.

Yes, I got the binary from http://osxexperts.net
As I said above, I changed to AppleSilicon version version 7.1 Copyright (c) 2000-2024 the FFmpeg developers built with Apple clang version 13.1.6 (clang-1316.0.21.2.5) in October last year. So all my timings above are based on that or the older jAlbum version.

What are you now providing?

jAlbum is now prompting users with old ffmpeg versions to install the new version via a notification. All ffmpeg binaries are updated to v7. (Takes one mouse click and an album make)
