Negative Upload speed?

Hello,
I have tried 100s of times to upload an album via the JAlbum upload. I have never succeeded once. With FileZilla it works without any problems. My provider is All-Inkl, I have 500 Mbit/sec fiber optics. Either the upload gets stuck at the beginning when calculating the upload size (sometimes already with the first MBs, sometimes after 2 GB - my album has 6 GB, the test album only 400 MB), sometimes it gets stuck with a jpg file and it simply doesn't go any further. And sometimes it shows a negative upload speed, see screenshot (-5 KB/s and over 100 minutes remaining for 400 MB!). How can an upload speed be negative?
I have tried all offered FTP types, none of them work. The connection can be established, but the upload never works. What could be the reason? What can I do to make it work? It works with FileZilla, but it takes a long time because FileZilla doesn't know what I have changed and always has to scan everything.
Thanks in advance,
Carmen

10 minutes later 142 minutes remaining and -6,26 KB/s....see screenshot.
And so on....it takes longer and longer, currently it shows 160 minutes remaining.

In your jAlbum server profile settings, try switching from FTP (ftp4j) to FTP (edtFTPj).
Even better, if your host supports it, use SFTP. Much more robust.

Which FTP type is "edtFTPj"? I can choose between FTP, FTPES, FTPS, SFTP and FTP (testing ftp4j). FTPS and SFTP doesn't work at all: no connection. I must have a professional (expensive) account to be able to use SFTP. I have a private account at All-Inkl.
The others shows "ftp" (FTP), "ftpes" (FTPES) and "ftp4j" (FTP (testing ftp4j) in the accounts.xml. I testet all types, but without success. I had never a working upload with different albums and different album sizes.
FileZilla: works ALWAYS.
Total Commander: works ALWAYS.
I have often read here in the forum (I searched for hours for a solution in this forum and via Google): "when it works with FileZilla, it works also with JAlbum" and "everything what FileZilla can do, JAlbum can also do" - but this is not true for me. FileZilla and also Total Commander works like a charm, JAlbum never. But I want to use JAlbum because FileZilla/Total Commander have to scan always 6 GB completely.
So I would appreciate to use the upload via JAlbum.

You must be running a very old version of jAlbum. Time to upgrade to the latest version! And make sure to clean out all the debris from older versions before you install the latest version. It takes only a few minutes:
https://jalbum.net/forum/thread.jspa?threadID=35746
Your profile settings panel should look like the attachment.
I used FileZilla for many years, but the jAlbum uploader is much faster, because of its use of a manifest file.
It's too bad your host doesn't provide SFTP - on mine, it's free, even though it's considered a "bargain" web host.

Apart from updating your old jAlbum version, also ensure that no software firewall is interfering with the transfer. That's a typical thing that can cause things to work perfectly in FileZilla but not in jAlbum.
If you see no resolution, please contact me directly at david_at_jalbum_dot_net and pass me your connection details (you can change your password temporarily). I'll then perform at test upload from here.
As for the negative speed. Yes, that looks like a bug. I suspect it may happen if jAlbum has to retry sending data it has sent before.

Hallo JeffTucker, I have renewed my JAlbum license in 07/2024 and have version 36.1 installed, see screenshot. Should be the newest version? How can I achieve the FTP dropdown list with the choices in your screenshot? My current dropdown list you can see in the screenshot.
I will have a look in the linked thread, perhaps I have garbage from old JAlbum version. I use JAlbum since 2006 (but up to now never used the JAlbum upload because in the past I created only small single Photopia Albums, not a whole big gallery as I do now with Tiger skin).
Thank you for the hint!
P.S. Yes, it is a pity that I can't use SFTP. I will ask my provider if there is a possibility to use it.

Hello David, thank you for your hints. I will try to deactivate the Firewall after I managed to get rid of garbage of old JAlbum versions and see the right FTP choice in the dropdown list.
I will give you feedback if I succeed.
Yes, the negative speed makes no sense, it should be always >= 0. It would be nice if an error message indicating the reason would appear when there is a problem during upload.

Ah, it's a faulty translation in the Deutsch version. David, this need to be fixed!
English = Deutsch
FTP (edtFTPj) = FTP (File Transfer Protocol)
FTP (ftp4j) = FTP (testing new ftp4j library)
Whichever one you're using new, try the other one.

Hello JeffTucker,
I followed the instructions of your link, deinstalled JAlbum and then reinstalled a clean JAlbum. But the FTP dropdown list didn't change, it is the same as before, see screenshot from my last reply.

Hello JeffTucker, sorry, I have read your post after my reply (forgot to press F5).
Yes, it is German. So I should use FTP (File Transfer Protocol)? I tried this, but the Upload doesn't work with this type.
I checked my provider and I could get SFTP for 2€/month more than my current contract. I thought it is much more expensive because it is called "Premium" instead of my current "Private" contract. So I think about to upgrade to the "Premium" contract in order I can then use SFTP.

After reinstallation I used "FTP (File Transfer Protocol)" as connection type, then I retried an upload of my 6 GB gallery. Before starting the upload I deactivated the Bitdefender and Microsoft Firewall see screenshots. First I thought the upload will succeed, because the progress was quite good. But then again, it stopped uploading. See screenshot, it shows the state when the upload stopped. The upload dialog shows always the rotating hour glass but the upload does not proceed. In Task Manager it shows 0 MBit/sec, see screenshot.
It is really frustrating that it does not work.
I will back next week for further tries (I am away over the weekend, i.e. offline the next 2 days). Perhaps I will then try SFTP with the Premium account.

Before starting the next upload, open jAlbum's system console (F7). Now do the upload. If there are errors, they will be printed to it. Also, if the upload gets stuck, then hit the "Dump threads" button in the top-right corner of the upload window. It will reveal where jAlbum is stuck. (I suspect waiting for IO, but let's see)
