I admit with the variants, originals, auto-fitting, and whatnot, the logic became very hard to follow, and once I fix one issue it often spoils other setups.

That's what I would call "an unwelcome surprise."
Time to repeat the adage: Don't do me any 'favors'.

And what's the moral of this story?

I'm using the default image settings in the linked album.

Don't remember, but it's the same muddled thinking that gave us the WEBP option. Bloat, all of it.

Sure it wasnt David?!?!?
I’m sure it wasn’t, but it came with jAlbum 24rc, the 24beta thread though has been deleted along with any possible feature request around that time.

Hello, there is something new to report.
I have marked some photos for the Tiger Slider in my test folder (link below). This creates a slide show at the top of the title image area. What is interesting here is that these photos are displayed in German sharpness. The difference in quality is clearly visible. First the title image of the folder is displayed (blurred), then the slider photos (sharp). I have also marked the title photo for the slider and will also be displayed sharply later, please don't be fooled by this.
Now the question is, why are the slider photos displayed sharply but a single title photo at the top of the folder is blurred?

I feel like we are running rounds around the same question.
- The theme image is just as sharp as other images on my monitor.
- The slide images are sharper because they have a larger resolution: 2500x2500 (?)
- The slideshow in the hero shows the images sharper because those are the slide images.
- The difference between the normal folderimage.jpg and the higher-resolution images is only perceptible on a retina display, which shows twice as many pixels as the normal image was sized for.
- The skin does not have a mechanism for generating super-high-resolution images for retina displays.

Why can't the topic image be displayed in the same way as the slide images?
Attached is an example of the different versions as they are displayed in my case. I took screenshots, and you can see the clear difference.

The image you posted here is 3148 pixels wide, but nobody will see it at this size. In reality, it's displayed as 1560px wide.
I guess you are using a retina monitor. The images on the internet are optimized for 120 dpi, like this hero image. I bet it's not the only image you see blurred on the internet. As I wrote, the skin doesn't yet have a method to provide 2x resolution images for the hero background. I'll probably add it in the future.
