Location data

I am greatly relieved to find that the ability to add a location manually in the edit page to non-camera geotagged photos seems to be working again. It stopped working at some point during v35 as far as I can tell. I have upgraded to v36, first, to support jAlbum and, second, to get the maps feature working again - though I do think it's somewhat unfair to expect users who may not wish to to upgrade their version simply to be able to use a feature that seemingly got broken along the way.
/End of moan.

I understand that feeling. Note though that we didn't break the Google Maps integration. It was due to a bug introduced by an update to the "WebView" component that Oracle provided with the JavaFX 18.0.1 update. Unfortunately, Oracle hasn't addressed this bug even thought it's been reported for years.
When we switched browser engine, we had to make significant rewrites to the Google Maps editor as the JavaScript API is different to that of the WebView component. While doing this rewrite we also ensured to comply with Google's latest API requirement, increasing the odds that this integration will continue working for many more years to come.

Thank you for your explanation David. None of my cameras have had built-in GPS but I used an aftermarket plug-in module with my old Nikon D200. My Panasonic Lumix and, most recently, my Fujifilm X100V and X100V1 cameras have smartphone apps which record location data and send it to the camera. My problem is that I often forget to start the app to record GPS data when I'm out taking photos and that's when the ability to add locations manually in jAlbum proves
invaluable. It's one of the edit features I use most often, and I'm glad to see it working again.

The one thing I most miss from Picasa is that it had an excellent integration with Google maps. Adding GPS data to images from my old Nikon was very easy. This capability is lacking, or is poorly implemented, in most newer image processing apps, perhaps because so many photos are now taken with phones, which have the GPS built in.

Please explain how you'd ideally like it to work!

The current implementation is certainly miles ahead of what it used to be. One key to using it effectively in jAlbum is to expand the right-side panel, so that you have a reasonably large window to work in. In Picasa, IIRC, you could give yourself a true full-sized window to play with (even if you can find a copy of the old Picasa executable, it's not usable at all - it just won't run). Being able to expand the Location window in both dimensions would be a plus, or maybe let it launch its own modal window.
I'll have to play with it a bit more on my Macbook - my impression from last week, when I was away from my desktop, was that it was a little balky when using a touchpad. Then again, just using a regular Google map in the browser is lousy with a touchpad.
But I find the touchpad awkward for a lot of things - extensive text editing, for example, is misery without a mouse. Maybe that's just me. Or maybe not - my sister always takes a cordless mouse to use with her Macbook.

I upvote this. The current panel is not the right place for the map. A separate window would be cool. And, by the way, instead of Google Maps use OpenStreetMap, which gives you much more precision. No, I don't need the satellite view, I need a map.

I'm with you, a touchpad is nothing to work with if you need precision and speed. And a cordless mouse, what a drag.
Cheers, Markus

For consistency, if implemented, it should match the histogram pane, ‘Control, or right clicking, the histogram window opens a menu letting you (un)dock the histogram.’

Good ideas. I make it possible to move the location editor to a separate window.
