How do I link jAlbum hosting to my Domain Names please?

I'm bamboozled with this even after looking for tutorials and Forum questions!

I naively thought that all I had to do was obtain the nameserver for jAlbum.net and change my current nameservers to one that points to jAlbum hosting?

My current nameservers are shown in the attachment. (I previously just had the jAlbum licence but for various reasons decided to change my hosting package to jAlbum.)

Do I change ns15.domaincontrol.com to john-simpson.jalbum.net ? If so does it need the folder location? ie /legsreunited (BTW is it case sensitive: john-simpson or John-Simpson?)

I've gone to my jAlbum settings page and entered the web address for legsreunited.

I've got 2 more websites to upload to my new jAlbum account but the legsreunited one works very well with you but has the jAlbum name in the web address.

https://john-simpson.jalbum.net/legsreunited/index.html

Thanks John

You want to use your own domains for the jAlbum hosting?

Then you can't touch your name servers. You have to keep those.

You point the domain by using either a CNAME to john-simpson.jalbum.net (for for example www.legsreunited.org.uk) or an A pointer for legsreunited.org.uk to the IP of john-simpson.jalbum.net (which is currently 16.170.197.84).

A nameserver is the server used for all your domain and subdomains settings. If you change that you'll also loose for example email server settings.

You can use a folder in your jAlbum hosting for a domain, but that is set up at jalbum.net. It must be an existing album in that case. (Good if you want to point several domains to an account and want to present different content for each domain.)

Thank you Anders.

The 2 screen shots show my Custom DNS settings and Add a New Record.

For the A record for legsreunited.org.uk ,do I press Remove and then go to Add new Record and use the IP of 16.170.197.84 ? If so what is the TTL and should that be changed and what to?

Presumably, I will then have to do the same for my other 2 domains?

Yes.
But remember that you have to add it to your list of domains at jalbum.net. You have only added www.legsreunited.org.uk now.
https should start working within maybe 10 minutes after have the "green mark" that the IP is correct.

If so what is the TTL and should that be changed and what to?
The TTL (TimeToLive) value doesn't matter for the functionality. It is the number of seconds the IP should be cached before a DNS server should ask its parent server for the value again. Short time is 1 minute (60). Long time is 1 day (86400). A short value can be good while testing, so if you have to change the IP you don't have to wait too long for the value to change. When it works you can raise the value so the value is cached longer.

Presumably, I will then have to do the same for my other 2 domains?
Yes...
But start with one and test it so you know if and how it works.

Thank you, thank you, thank you, I couldn't have done this without your help.

I will be loading my other websites up in the coming days and should they go to plan, then I shall close this question as answered.

I think that there should be a special section about attaching domains to Albums with a step-by-step guide for the not-too technically minded or in my case, the old and forgetful!

Best wishes John Simpson

Yes Rob, I had read that article and understood what to do in jAlbum settings, but didn't understand your second bullet point instruction that said:

Add a CNAME for your domain to robm.jalbum.net

I had been looking at my domain name setting, which is outside jAlbum.net, but I was unsure what to do.

Anders clarified this for me and his explanation could be added to the instructions together with some graphics showing a typical Custom DNS and how to Add a New Record and the IP address of jAlbum.net to be used in the A pointer.

I don’t have my own domain, so can’t provide further information. I could update the documentation if I’m given all the information and screenshots. Or someone else who knows more about it could do the edit.

I suggest you ask Anders Callertun who helped me or get yourself a domain name and try it first hand.

Anders - I probably won't need this advice again but it would be good for other people who are unsure about pointing their own domain name to jAlbum.net.

That's a shame. Having got to an age where I can qualify as a grumpy old man I have embraced it, I'm with Rick Wakeman, https://youtu.be/ieQCGT_YHAE?feature=shared
