jAlbum opens storage hub in the US

TL;DR You can now have your albums hosted in the US if using jAlbum storage. Try now!

If you are using our storage (Premium, Power or Super) your files have always been on servers located in Sweden. This is good for most of our users, since most of our customers are in Europe. But we have many customers outside Europe too, and especially in the US. If that's you having your files in Europe isn't optimal. It takes about 100ms (on a good day) for the data packets to cross the Atlantic Ocean so uploads can be slow and viewing the albums can be a bit sluggish. It has however worked so well that most of you haven't been bothered by this.

Since we now are completely "in the cloud" we can change this, so we have now opened a storage hub in the US, specifically in Northern Virginia! If you and most of your viewers are located in North America it would be good to have your files here instead of in Sweden.

I have uploaded the Sample Project album with some videos added to both our old storage in EU/Sweden and to the new one in US/N. Virginia. You can all compare the speeds. If you are in North America, the one in the US should be faster.

The US hosting is still being tested, but if you want to try this out you can open a new account with the 30-days hosting trial and send an email to support@jalbum.net that you want to try it. Or if you are brave you tell support@jalbum.net to switch your current account to the US one. We can always switch you back if you encounter issues or is having second thoughts.

We want feedback on this one. If it is well received, we may open up hubs in other locations.

No such place. There are two States: Virginia and West Virginia (which split off during the Civil War, and supported The Union). There is, however, an area of Virginia known as Northern Virginia. I lived there for over 30 years (within walking distance of one of the original Mae East facilities). Often abbreviated NoVa.

A subtle distinction, to be sure, but it's like the difference between North Sweden and Northern Sweden.

Yes, I'm pedantic. ;)

I actually don't want my account moved. I keep my skin demo pages in two places.

U.S. host, much faster for North American visitors: https://jefftucker.net/

Swedish host, much faster for European visitors: https://jefftucker.jalbum.net/skins/

The problem, of course, is that I have no way of steering visitors to the faster one. :(

I have perhaps one of the slower (read cheaper) internet plans with my provider, Verizon (300 Mbps). Looking at Jeff's two sites (using Win10, Chrome with 10 open tabs at 10:45 PM EDT and 100 miles north of Northern Virginia ;-) ) I really don't feel or see any viewing differences. Images in both situations are displayed essentially immediately.

Perhaps if there were videos or extremely large files involved there would be more of a difference. That's my $0.02 on the matter.

No such place. There are two States: Virginia and West Virginia (which split off during the Civil War, and supported The Union). NB: that was during the Civil War, today West Virginia mostly supports the Confederacy.

In viewing AnCa's sites, the US hub does seem a bit faster IF you just want to flip through photos. From a marketing standpoint though, perhaps the idea of having a US location will appeal to some.

You should. I've always just seen N. Virginia. Haven't reflected it can be anything but North. :)

That's mostly because my skins are so fabulously efficient, they laugh up their sleeves at transoceanic hops on the interwebs!

I see only a very subtle difference - it's more of a "feel" than something easily measurable.

I have now added video demos at https://anca-eu.jalbum.net/Videos/ and https://anca-us.jalbum.net/Videos/. The one closest to you might start a bit quicker, but you shouldn't notice any difference while playing.

It is a big difference when uploading these video albums though. Then uploading to the US (across the Atlantics) I get about 4MB/s. When uploading to Sweden I get close to 14MB/s...

In viewing AnCa's sites, the US hub does seem a bit faster IF you just want to flip through photos.

I now made the images in the two image demo albums larger, so maybe the difference is larger now.

True.

There is now a link on your Settings tab to switch storage location. Click the "Location: Europe" text and you'll get the window to change location.

Pfft. Boring choices. Let me know when I can host my fabulous content in Ouagadougou, or McMurdo Station.
