Icon style option (thin vs. fat) doesn't seem to do anything
Posted: 24 Feb 24, 00:26

I noticed this "Icon style" option on the Site-Design panel. I would like to see more prominent icon symbols as there were in Turtle. (Like the "go back up a level" button.)

However, selecting "Fat" for "Icon style" doesn't seem to affect the sample layout in the Tiger panel and applying it to my project also doesn't seem to have any effect. Am I missing something?

Oh, never mind. I see now it's very subtle. Too bad.

(I say "too bad" because it's easy for someone unfamiliar with this album software to miss this useful button.)

Refresh your browser cache. The difference isn't dramatic. Screenshots.

Truly fat icons are considered passé. I still offer them in most of my skins, but they're a vanishing breed. And there are a few skins out there (not Laza's or mine) that offer huge, cartoon-like icons from the 1990's.

Yeah, I just noticed the difference.

Not looking for truly fat or huge just easily noticeable icon buttons for someone who doesn't already know how to navigate the album.

That "go back up a level" button is the worst example. Very easy to overlook. Funny though how unnecessarily prominent the blue-backed "play slideshow" and "share" buttons are in the same hero banner:

I think there might be a quick fix for Laza to consider. Now, the icon is much more obvious upon mouseover, because then the blue background shows up - screenshot. Maybe it should show that background at all times, and show the text tooltip upon mouseover.

Yeah, it's curious that the other buttons in the hero/banner area are drawn with a blue background when inactive but not the "up level" button. (See screenshot above.)

All of them having a darkened background (not necessarily solid) would be sufficient, though I would prefer a neutral gray rather than any color hue like blue.

Marking as "unanswered" to get follow-up on suggestion to use a background fill on the button.

Just tried out the update....

I see that the "up level" button now has a background like the others. Thanks!

However, the "fat style" now renders boxes instead of icons for all the buttons.
CORRECTION: The "fat style" only seems to break by falling to use the preview option to view the album. (I was looking at it by directly opening the index.html in my browser. Yes, I know I shouldn't. Force of habit.)

However, it seems that the transparency option on the button color is not saved? It always reverts to zero and is not applied.

Can you please explain it?

Now the button has the normal button color when no darkening is applied. It is transparent when an image-type background is used and has a 20% black otherwise. I guess I flipped the logic: should have the 20% applied on an image-type hero, and the transparent on plain backgrounds.

When I went to adjust the button color I saw that the color selector also allowed you to specify opacity/transparency from 0 to 100. I thought cool, I could have the button backgrounds show about 50% opacity. However, any transparency value specified in this color picker doesn’t apply and the value returns to zero. Is this an unsupported feature? I didn’t try to see if it works for other element colors.

Now the button has the normal button color when no darkening is applied. It is transparent when an image-type background is used and has a 20% black otherwise. I guess I flipped the logic: should have the 20% applied on an image-type hero, and the transparent on plain backgrounds.

I don’t know what your intention is but I am using an image for the hero banner and I thought it would look nice if the buttons overlaying it were partially transparent (a see through background to them) if that were indeed an option. However, I’ll keep the solid background in the buttons if that’s not supported because completely transparent button backgrounds make buttons too easy to miss/overlook when using a hero image.

Thanks!

Correct
Ah, I see. I guess it's a jAlbum issue. The button color setting is using the normal color selector, not the transparency selector. I'll report it to David.

Perhaps I'll add a new option to make all the buttons on the hero semi-transparent instead of the colored version.

I had never noticed that. The color selector always gives you a transparency option, even though the skin is coded for a solid color. It really shouldn't.

(I removed most of the semi-transparent color options from my skins - too difficult for most users to deal with. Still a few opacity settings, but only for things like the background on an "up" arrow that appears on the body.)
