- I don't know what "the caret" is. Is this something visible ?
It is the vertical bar that appears at an insertion point. See this image, https://jalbum.net/help/en/Image:Custom_order.jpg

The Folder ordering options are always grayed out, no matter what I select or don't select.
This one is grayed out if the order of the images is "Custom" or "According to jAlbum settings". The latter may be a bug, because if the album settings are different from "Custom", you cannot sort the folders.
Jeff, I'm very happy to be able to teach you something for once

I have never seen this in jAlbum, in version 34 or previous versions (we agree that your capture was made in the "Explore" view)
- I am under Windows, can it be different on a Mac?
- Maybe this is controlled by a setting I accidentally turned off?
You will only see it if you move the cursor to a point close to an object and then wait. Try dragging an object to between two other objects and then it should appear.

Oops, I had forgotten that you can see the cursor when you drag an image
On the other hand, even if I leave the mouse pointer without movement between 2 images or near the edge of an image, even for several tens of seconds, I do not see the cursor appear...

It only appears at an insertion point, if you are not trying to add an object then there is no insertion point to show.

On the Ordering context menu, there's a reference to According to jAlbum Settings. What jAlbum settings are those? Where are they? Choosing that option certainly does produce some reordering, but on some mysterious basis.
They are from Settings > Pages > Image ordering
https://jalbum.net/help/en/jAlbum/Settings/Pages#Image_ordering
I must have had an attack of wishful thinking. For a brief moment, I thought that David had implemented my proposals for object sorting, which have, for several years now, started with "get rid of default image ordering." Alas, that's still there. I've always thought that images should be added in whatever order the user initially planted them, with no "refresh surprises."
That, of course, would also take care of the almost perpetually grayed-out folder sorting options. It really shouldn't matter what the defaults are set to - you should always be able to say, "put the folders first." And if there were no default setting for it, there wouldn't be any conflict.
So, object sorting is better than it used to be, but it's still too byzantine by half.

And I'm still hopelessly confused by the options.
The Folder ordering options are always grayed out, no matter what I select or don't select.
They become active if you select any other ordering but "custom" AND tick the "Folders first" option.

See Settings->Pages->Image ordering.

See Settings->Pages->Image ordering.
As I said, I had an attack of wishful thinking. I thought that setting had finally been banished, and that those old settings were gone. No such luck.

Sorry Jeff. If I'm to do away with the "jAlbum ordering", then I guess we at least need to add a "According to parent folder" ordering option
