Why Onedrive?

Hi, I’m totally new to jAlbum.
I’ve just uploaded my first album – but why is it also stored on my hard drive under “One drive”?
I have a Premium account, not cheap… And as I understood it, that means my pictures will be stored on jAlbum’s servers.
Why duplicate them (triplicate, actually, as they’re already there to begin with) on my HD…?

That's Microsoft doing you a "favor." You've got MS OneDrive enabled, so it tries to grab all of your files, and store them to its cloud, so they're accessible on all your other devices.
When you make an album in jAlbum, the complete album is created on your PC (jAlbum isn't a server-side application). It is then uploaded to your hosting account, either jalbum.net or some other host.
But then OneDrive sees all these new files in Documents and says, "Hey! I need to copy all of these to the cloud!"
Alas, according to Microsoft, you can exclude Documents from the OneDrive service, but you can't tell it to ignore just one of the folders within it, which is spectacularly bad design.
I'll poke around a little more to see if there's some easy way around this....

I think the quick fix for this is to move My Albums to a location outside of the other "standard" Windows directories (like Documents, Pictures, Videos, and so on). So, you might stash it under C:\Users\yourname\My Albums. You can pin that location to Windows Explorer (so you don't have to go hunting for it every time). Then I believe you can tell OneDrive to ignore it. (I'm kind of guessing here, because I don't use it.)
You'll have to tell jAlbum what you've done. Pull up Tools > Preferences > Projects, and change the location of Projects directory, either by typing it in by hand, or by clicking the little folder icon on the right and navigating to its new location.

BTW, the files shown under OneDrive on your PC aren't physically present on your hard drive. Those are just links that point to the cloud copies of those files.
So, if you've got plenty of OneDrive storage, maybe there's no harm in letting them get copied to the cloud for safekeeping.

Thank's Jeff. "BTW, the files shown under OneDrive on your PC aren't physically present on your hard drive." Well, Explorer says that they are... (I have a Swedish version, so I'm not sure about the name "Explorer"). When I check "Properies" (again, not sure...) it says my album of 55 pics is about 0,5 GB on my harddrive.

Not sure how OneDrive behaves, but iCloud does something similar. If I look at the properties on its folder, it tells me that the "size" is 55MB, but the "size on disk" is zero. (I have one foot in each world - Win11 desktop, Macbook Air, iPhone - so iCloud is easier for me, even though it's a little flaky.)
In any event, jAlbum certainly isn't putting any files there by itself. The project is in My Albums/Project Name, and the completed album is in My Albums/Project Name/album. There are no other copies anywhere. The album is also on the server (but not the whole project, with all its inputs).

True, but I don't speak anything other than English (British) and getting others to contribute is near impossible. Not sure how good an online translator would be. |

You can use Google Translate to translate the help pages to Swedish. This is the link: https://jalbum-net.translate.goog/help/en/Tutorials?_x_tr_sl=auto&_x_tr_tl=sv&_x_tr_hl=sv&_x_tr_pto=wapp
It's far from perfect, but maybe easier if you're more comfortable reading Swedish than English.
Me (the jAlbum server guy) and David (the jAlbum client guy) are Swedes, but keeping help pages upto date in multiple languages is a huge task, so we're not... And there are unfortunately too few Swedes using jAlbum... RobM is doing a great job keeping the English upto date. |
