Codec HEVC per video
Posted: 1 Jul 23, 17:31

Attachment Problema_Video.jpg (151.0 KB)

You need to tell your Pixel 6a to store the videos as H.264, instead of HEVC. I don't have a Pixel, so I can't give you exact instructions, but look for something under Camera > More Settings > Advanced > something about efficiency. HEVC files are smaller, so they're more "efficient," but that doesn't do you any good if you can't play them anywhere except the phone!

HEVC is a patent-encumbered format that isn't supported in Windows unless you purchase the codecs for it. jAlbum doesn't support the format.

You should be able to can convert existing HEVC videos with Handbrake:

It is probably worth updating ffmpeg. Open jAlbum’s configuration directory, quit jAlbum, go to the bin folder. Delete ffmpeg and restart jAlbum.

Yes, I spoke too soon. jAlbum can't handle a video with a .hevc extension, but it will take care of a .mkv file without complaint.

Still probably a good idea to tell the Pixel 6a to stop using that encoding, since it's not supported in Windows. You need something like VLC to play them.

(As with HEIC images, the phone makers assume that you'll never want to view any of your photos or videos anywhere except your phone, so they end up using formats that aren't widely supported.)
