persistent ratings and comments and favourites and private albums
Posted: 1 May 23, 13:17

Hi,

The last month I was looking and testing several photo album applications.

I tested Coppermine, iGalerie, Lychee, jAlbum, Zenphoto, WordPress, WP Photo Album Plus and Piwigo.

Not suprisingly, Jalbum is the most powerful and modern photoalbum manager with a supportive and active community.

But, it lacks (for me) some really essential options found in the other applications who are not available in jAlbum when using my own host provider.

I am missing or could not find how to:

  • persistent comments on individual photos for individual users
  • persistent ratings on individual photos for individual users
  • private albums, invisible for the outside world, accessable for users with passwords
  • for individual users, setting photos in albums as personal favourites and view them in a sort of virtual album,

Storing information like ratings in cookies is not a working solution for me.

I understand that some kind of database would be required for these options to work, perhaps a "flat file" database like the H2 database Engine.

My question is, will these options be available in a next release or version ?

Regards, Ton

jAlbum albums are purely client-side. There is no server-side processing available, and that's what would be needed in order to support most of things you have mentioned. There are no plans to change this.

If you are hosting your albums on jalbum.net, you can put a password on an album, so that only authorized users can view it. If you are hosting your albums on your own web host, almost all hosts provide a way to put a password on a directory. Password-protecting the directory that contains a given album then makes it private, viewable only by visitors who can provide the password.

Hi Jeff,

thank you for your answer.

yes, the password part is the least essential request for imbedding in jAlbum, I could even do that myself using a few htaccess lines for groups and users.

And I was afraid you would tell me that about the other requests :)
jAlbum is superior in many ways, some of the other albums do not even suport webp yet.

But for a few albums I really need persistent ratings and personal favourites.
I'm afraid I'll have to spread my photo albums across two applications and link them to each other.

I am really happy with my current host-provider and no urge at the moment to switch to jalbum.net.

But curious, do you know if persisten comments and ratings and favourites are available at jalbum.net ?

I have a standard jAlbum license, so I think I can't check that out for myself ?

Regards, Ton

No, they're not. The jalbum.net servers provide no server-side processing (no PHP, no SQL, etc.).

jAlbum widgets do provide a way for users to leave comments on albums, whether they're hosted on jalbum.net or on your own server. But the skin developers generally discourage their use, since they're an "addon" that interferes with album presentation. Most of us have been asking for their removal for several years. My skins don't support widgets at all. So, I can't recommend using them.

No. Unless you have a hosting account, you can't upload albums to jalbum.net.

The jalbum.net server does not allow users to do any server-side processing. No PHP, no SQL, no CMS - static pages only. Because of this limitation, jAlbum skins are designed not to include any capabilities that would require server-side processing.
