Swipe up/down on smartphones to view/hide "info" (e.g., captions)
Posted: 26 Mar 23, 19:30

On smartphones & tablets, I enjoy the ability to swipe forward/back to advance/back up.

Wonder if it'd be difficult to include an up/down swipe option to show/hide the "Info" (e.g., captions). Maybe swiping up on the lower half of screen to display and swiping down lower half to hide?

I generally prefer to look thru photos with the captions, but with limited real estate on smartphone screens, the info box can reduce the photo size a fair bit, so I often toggle to see the full-size image. But it currently takes a tap to display the control bar and another tap to toggle the info. It doesn't seem like much but a swipe would make this much more convenient when going thru a slide show.

Not impossible, but the swipe routine already handles the swipe up and down gestures for images taller than the screen. So this could be used only for small images. Also, it should handle the vertical constraint, so after a few pixels move it should decide if the move is horizontal or vertical.

I see. Part of why I'd asked is that I've found that friends & family still seem to prefer the experience of Google Photos on smartphones versus those I've been able to create using jAlbum/Tiger, especially now that Google Photos includes the caption in the single photo view (though they don't derive captions from metadata).

I'm just trying Google Photos now, I see they actually toggle the "Info" with a tap and use a 3-dot menu for more extensive options. They also overlay the captions (when necessary) to allow full-screen use of the photos and put the other buttons on an invariable bar below the caption.

I realize there are as many opinions on how things should work as there are people using it, but it does seem helpful to look at the design of some of the big players in hosted photos space to see the choices they've made for ease of use.

Alternatively, might there be another jAlbum skin that would allow me to more closely mimic the behavior of Google Photos?

Thanks!

I have just started working on a minimalistic skin - Plain skin (?) - that is taking inspiration from these mobile-centered galleries.

Thanks. Will be interested to see what you come up with.

I hadn't tried it before, but the behavior of the Story skin on mobile is much closer to what I was seeking, so I'll probably try that a bit more too.

I did notice on testing Story that swiping to advance doesn't seem to work for videos on Firefox (it works for images). It doesn't work on either Android & Windows versions of Firefox. In the case of Windows, there's a "next" button to fall back on, but with Android you get stuck on the video and have to exit slideshow mode. I'm seeing the same behavior with Firefox with Tiger.

Swiping videos does work on Chrome (Android & Windows) and Edge (Windows), so presumably something unique to Firefox.

I just tried with your multimedia sample with same result in Firefox: https://samples.jalbum.net/Tiger%20demo%202/index.html

Thanks again.

I believe this is a bad VIDEO element implementation in Firefox, but they seem to insist on this. Fortunately, Firefox for mobile is not so popular.
