File not found (404 error)

I'm having problems with uploading. It worked one day, failed the next. I get the message "File not found (404)". How do I identify what file is missing? At the top of the browser window I see "http://astronutcase.net/public_html/my%20favorites/" but that folder does exist. I was running version jAlbum 29.1.20 but updated to 29.2 without any change to the problem.

The public_html is where the page is on the server, but that's not part of the URL. The correct link is:

http://astronutcase.net/my%20favorites/

To take care of this properly in the uploader, choose Tools, Upload/Manage, connect to your server, and navigate to the public_html folder, so that it's selected (don't open it). Now click the little folder-with-a-globe-on-the-corner icon, the one whose tooltip is Mark as web root.

Following future uploads, the URL that comes back should now be correct.

Thanks, Jeff. That worked, however now I've got another problem. When I hit "Make album" I get the error message "Cannot access the page". Obviously I messed something up. On the good side my web page was correctly updated and I was able to upload a different album without any problems and I can select "Make album" with that one without error. Just need to get rid of the new error.

Just a guess, but what happens if you make the album, upload it (with the correct address showing), then save the project and exit? When you reopen the project, and make the album again, does the error return?

I can't "Make album" nor can I "Force remake" without getting the error message. With "force remake" it looks like it's going through all the images just before the "Cannot access the page" message pops up so perhaps the error is occurring during some final stage.

This is a very puzzling message. Where are you seeing this message? Is it occurring in a popup window? Does it say anything else? Open the system console - F7. Copy and paste whatever you see there.

BTW, don't waste time doing a Force Remake - this just forces jAlbum to reprocess all the images (and videos), and the images have nothing to do with this error. On top of that, since all the output images are now "new," they all have to be uploaded again.

It does occur in a popup window. Here's what's in the system console:

jAlbum 29.2 system console running Groovy (Groovy Scripting Engine)
This section captures debug prints sent to System.out and System.err
The top section evaluates expressions.
Press Ctrl+E to evaluate an expression. (Evaluates selected text if selection is active)
You have access to the basic jAlbum implicit objects such as engine and window

Sample expressions:
4*(3+2); // Basic calculations
engine.getSkin(); // Use of implicit object
for (AlbumObject ao : selectedObjects) println ao; // Iterate over selected objects
window.messageBox("You can interact with any Java object");
Profiler.instance // Print profiling data for last album build

And there's nothing else in the popup window? Just "Cannot access the page?"

I just made a test album with your project settings, and got no error messages.

No, there is nothing else in the popup window. I've tried resetting Windows but the error message still pops up. I only get the message in this project. I have 2 other projects that work just fine. Perhaps the problem is associated with the Gromit skin I'm only using with this project (although it seems very unlikely). I know Gromit is quite old (in fact I'm not sure if it is still available). I can try another skin (although I'm worried about losing Gromit settings) or I can try restoring an old copy of the project. I see there is an option to duplicate a project - maybe that can help. Any suggestions before I do something rash?

Well, I just dredged up my copy of Gromit, and that error message isn't present in any of the template files in the skin, so it simply can't be coming from there. And as I said, I built an album with your settings, without any problems.

I have to conclude that this is coming from the jAlbum core somewhere, but I don't even recognize the error message.

No harm in switching to another skin - just take that skin's default settings and make the album. You can then just delete the output - click the little down-arrow next to the project name, then choose Delete, Delete local album. Then close the project without saving it. If you then reopen the project, Gromit and all its settings will be back.

Well I tried several skins and they all gave the same error message. I restored a couple old versions of the project and they also failed. I then reverted back to jAlbum version 29.1.10 and the problem went away. Looks like something in version 29.2 doesn't like my project (and it's a really simply project - not even slightly complex). So for now, I'm ok. Of course, being at a back level without knowing what the real problem is may only be delaying the problem. Do you want to close this issue or would you like to try some experiments with my project against level 29.2 ?

At least we know it's not a skin thing. I'm running jAlbum 29.2, and can't reproduce the error. Maybe the error message will ring a bell with David. He's been under the weather, so he might not address this for a bit.

What if you switch to using an external browser instead of the internal/windowed browser under Preferences?

The "Cannot access the page" error is generated when jAlbum is receiving a 401 or above error message from the web server while accessing the web page. It's likely caused by a misconfiguration of your web root setting. When your external browser tries to open the page for preview now, it still probably won't work. Now observe the address. You can copy and paste the address here for inspection.

I see there is an update to version 29.2. I downloaded and installed 29.2.1 in preparation for trying your browser experiment (I had gone back to 29.1.10) however the failure has now disappeared. Don't know if the update fixed the problem or something else has changed. I've tried all 3 of my projects and they all now work.
