Max file size for upload

Hi All,
I’m sure this has been covered but cannot see it exactly.
I just want to have some pictures on my site and generally just upload some.
Lately, the last month or so, uploading has become very slow.
Now, I’m aware it’s primarily my fault, as I just uploaded my edited shots and some are 60 odd MB.
I’ve relied on jAlbum doing all the necessary maths etc.
Should I make the change and say for example, upload smaller jpegs or smaller tifs?
Yes I know it relates to resolution as well, I just wonder whether my problem is uploading too big an image and bogging jAlbum down…
Cheers.

60Mb for an image seems a bit on the big side, especially for images of 1000x750 - you could turn off hiDPI images, so you are only producing 1000x750 maximum.

Thanks RobM. I might try that.
I guess I could also just jpeg the pictures I want to upload and then delete them from my PC once uploaded, so that I only have the TIFs at home.
This question was also raised as I wasn't getting full screen in the album online. I looked for other skins. I just want the images to fill the screen.

There are several skins that supports full screen, but no filter to identify them so you will need to try the sample albums o read the manuals. You could also try loading a skin and then search fo ‘Full’, see if it returns a control setting or full screen.
Remember though, full screen can vary from small phone to 4K monitor, so your images really need to have limits of 2000x2000.

Thanks again Rob. It’s interesting that I changed my settings to 2000 x 2000 and it said many of my images were not high enough res! I know the file sizes were high, I’ll crank up my album and take a look at all image settings..

It will warn you if you still have HiDPI images selected, as for 2000px you will need 4000px. Just turn the HiDPI off.

And using 2000x2000 as image bounds is a little misguided. The biggest monitor in common circulation is the iMac 27, which is 2560x1440. So any slide image larger than that is a bit pointless. To ensure full size, bounds of 2560x1440 would do the trick.
But remember that if a skin forces an image to occupy the entire screen, the image is going to get cropped unless it just happens to be exactly the same aspect ratio as the monitor. That's why almost no skins offer that type of "full screen" - photographers don't want their images to be cropped arbitrarily.

True, I was trying to keep it simple as his posted album has images of all aspect ratios. Maybe the best size limits to use are those of your own monitor, a bit like the best camera is the one you have with you.

Right, I've spent a bit of time with this.
Firstly, my main issue turned out to be some issue with connectivity to my Synology box.
So, I copied all pictures to my laptop including the album settings and loading was much better; even with the original image sizes.
Before I did above, I resized copies of all pictures to a max of 2000 pixels and saved an pngs.
I uploaded these and was not happy with the results online!
I decided then to go the automatic route. I chose the high res folder as source and batch jpeged all to a new folder using Photoshop's Sc.ripts\Image Processor
This created a new folder of 238 MB as apposed to 1.2 gig..... that helped..... ya think!
I'm pleased with the album now. Pictures are good enough for viewing and I obviously still have the high res folder locally when I want to look at them.
Thanks all again.
Oh I tried Mirage at 2000 and the images were off screen. I went back to Photoblogger plus 1000x750 and that'll do for me. I've fiddled long enough for now.

The PNG format is for graphics. It's rarely used for photographs - it's very inefficient for that purpose.
ETA: Sticking with PNG is fine when you're actually doing detailed photo editing, since it's lossless, and the big file sizes aren't a problem when the files are all on your own SSD drive. But when it comes time to crank out the final version for use on the web, high-quality JPG is the way to go (sRGB color space).
There are some much better formats out there that offer very high quality with much smaller files, but it's still a "war of the formats," so choosing one is a forlorn hope at this point. Support is very spotty across the browsers.

Mirage is not a responsive skin, so the image size won't adapt to the size of the screen.
Photoblogger is responsive, but 1000x750 image bounds will produce images that are really too small for a standard 1920x1080 monitor.

Thanks Jeff. I've just pushed Photoblogger to 2000x2000. I'm pleased with that and will stop there.
I have to say that generally I have just uploaded to jAlbum and been happy. But a revived interest in photography, the issue with my Synology, possibly wifi has brought the settings into focus. This is the first time I've really delved into the back end of the album.
I've always tried to stay away from getting bogged down with resolution, pixels count etc, but I can't hide forever!

Overkill, but only when it comes to portrait mode photos - 2000x1000 will achieve the same visible results, but with files that are sometimes much smaller.

Going by your earlier response that 1000x750 might be too small, I applied the catch all of using 2000x2000. Possibly overkill, but it covers portrait and landscape. I gave t read whether I can set it per picture, but as long as it doesn’t upset anyone, hopefully it’s fine.

If you ever want to set image bounds for specific images try My plug-in which makes it easier to do.
