I am using an iMac and I am experiencing a serious bug, making the software not usable. Inside jAlbum the pictures are blurred, so are the pictures in the website produced by jAlbum. The strange thing is in jAlbum, if you magnify the picture, it become sharper. And the sharpness remains after shrinking it again. This however, does not seem to help in the website produced.
Does anyone notice the same?

We need more information, such as:
Can you provide a link to a blurry image?
What version of OS and JAlbum are you using?
How large is the original image and what format?
Is it all images in all projects?

And pay no attention to how the image looks in the jAlbum Explore view. That's using a very basic rendering engine, to keep things fast. It's not intended for fine-tuning images, and has nothing to do with how it will look in the album.

It appears that the original that you're using in the project is 768x1024. It doesn't matter how large you set the image bounds - jAlbum will not make the image bigger than the original.
ETA: The EXIF information on the image tells the story - see screenshot. That's the resolution of the original image. jAlbum doesn't change the EXIF data when it scales images.

Two more things....
You're using Turtle, which is obsolete and unsupported. Switch to Tiger.
You're letting Turtle fit the image to the screen, which may result in the image being shown larger than its actual size. Browser image enlargement sometimes has very poor results - the browser has to interpolate to provide the "missing" pixels. Some browsers do better than others, but it's a roll of the dice. In this case, on my monitor, the image display defaults to 788x1040px, whereas the image is actually 768x1024px.

You're making this very difficult for us.
Create a test album with just one image. Choose Link to originals via scaled images. Set the Scaling method to Smooth and Standard. Set Sharpening to 0. Set the JPEG Quality to 85% (more than that makes no visible difference, and just produces oversized files). Make the album, upload it somewhere, and give us a link to it.

No, the original is 2560x1920.
Can you remake the test album but with image linking set to originals?

I now discovered the source of the problem. When I drag the picture from Photos and drop it in jAlbum, for some reason the resolution became lower. What I need to do instead is to first drag and drop the picture to a folder in MacOS and then drag and drop it to jAlbum. Is this a known bug?

I am reasonably happy with the result, and I think I can play around with it for some time. BTW, is there a way to get rid of the banner at the top (which is generated automatically but with low resolution)?

If you have made any edits in Photos, like cropping it, you will get the edited photo when dragging it out. |

That's a MacProblem, which jAlbum can't fix. I believe it's what the Photos application does, by default.
BTW, is there a way to get rid of the banner at the top (which is generated automatically but with low resolution)?
See Tiger > Site > Hero.
I'm not sure why Tiger is scaling the theme/hero image to a width of only 1600px, since most monitors these days are 1920px wide. In my own skins, I'm defaulting to 2000px, and it perhaps should be even larger, to accommodate iMac 27's. |

BTW, one setting I highly recommend, to keep Tiger from showing your scaled image larger than it actually is, which often causes poor focus: Tiger > Lightbox > Control bar > Maximum enlargement, choose 1.0.

I am getting more and more happy with Tiger. Thank you for your guidance.
One thing I am keen to get but don't know exactly how it works. It is about showing the data of the photography (exposure, aperture, etc). I believe it should be under
Advanced > Metadata
but sometimes I get it and sometimes I don't. Please let me know the correct way to set it up.

Displaying the metadata is a skin setting. The jAlbum setting you're looking at just tells whether the metadata will be made available to the skin. Whether the skin uses it or not, and how it uses it, is another matter.
Skins do this in very different ways. In Tiger, take a look at Tiger > Lightbox > Buttons > Photo data. But in, say, Neptune, look at Neptune > Metadata.
They also display that information in totally different ways. The result, in Neptune: https://jefftucker.net/neptune/maps/. Hover on the "camera" icon at lower left on any slide image. |
