jAlbum 20.1 beta for testing
Posted: 01-May-2020 22:07
I have an early beta of jAlbum 20.1 for you. This one has a (in my humble opinion) very convenient way of copying and pasting metadata onto multiple images:

To try out the beta, ensure you're running jAlbum 20, then replace lib/jalbum-core.jar with this one and texts/texts.properties with that one

Here's how it works:
As you hover the mouse over various fields of the details view (title, comment etc), there is now a small "Copy" button appearing. Click it to copy that metadata to the clipboard. Now select the target images and paste from the clipboard. You will notice how the clipboard changes from merely saying "Paste" to "Paste xyz where xyz is the type of field you've copied. (Pasting actually works no matter in what view mode you are)

I'm not seeing the "Paste xyz" functionality. It just says "Paste."

It's a little confusing. If I right-click on, say, the Copyright field, the Copy context menu item isn't available, since I haven't selected any text. I can copy that field only by clicking on the new icon at the right end of the field. But when I want to paste, I have to use the regular right-click context menu. That seems inconsistent, and a little counter-intuitive.

And some fields can't be targeted, like Camera date. Not that I'd want to mess with it, but....

And if I copy and paste the File name field, I end up with two images with the same name. Not good! An F5 refresh undoes the change, but....

I'm seeing, sometimes, a 'message' saying 'Copied, now select target followed by "Paste creator"'. See attached. Must say not what I expected and I don't see it often.

Also confusing, when you paste, it doesn't replace the existing entry, but appends it to what's already there.

I'm getting the feeling that this is one of those things that could cause a careless user to make a mess of the metadata on his image files. The "pastes" can be undone with a CTRL-Z, but the user really has to keep his wits about him when tinkering with this.

This may be a case of introducing UI complexity for the benefit of a tiny handful of users.

ETA: There's already a perfectly good mechanism for copying and pasting image titles and comments. Is there really a need for a (more complicated) way to deal with other metadata fields? Seems like a bridge too far, to me.

I've never seen that one! I think we're seeing some substantial platform variations.

It is possible to select multiple items, ready for pasting, and then copy from the non-selected source. Sort of like it but it seems wrong to be copying from a non-selected object.

Yes, I initially fumbled about with that. Like Uncle Leo, I'm an old man! I'm confused!

Man, I'm confused that you are confused. Just click that new "Copy" button, this will put the contents of that field into the clipboard along with a tag so jAlbum knows to not simply treat it as a text string, but to actually know if it's a title, comment, creator etc. Now multi-select target items and select Paste. DON'T enter a text field, then you actually do a plain textual paste to that field only. Well, now that's the case anyway if you do another core update :-)

So in essence, I haven't changed the ordinary copy/paste behavior when you have selected text within a text field or when you paste text into a focused text field. What I've changed is what happens when you use the new "Copy" button (see Edit->Paste xxx).

I noticed a confusing bug: The contextual menu should have a "Paste xxx" item too, not just the main menu. Will fix...

Ah! I'm seeing the "Paste Title" text only in the toolbar Edit... menu. Who the hell ever uses that?! People expect to use the right-click context menu, or just CTRL-C, CTRL-V.

If we're confused, what does that suggest to you? ;)

Not so much confused as more extremely efficient (or lazy) ;)

It gets worse. If I copy, say, the Title, then select several images, and hover on the Comment field of one of them, right-click, and choose Paste, the title is copied into the comment fields on all of those images.

To me, this is very much like all of the keyboard combinations (CTRL, Alt, Opt, etc.) for adding a folder to a project. You need a handy wall chart to have any hope of figuring out what's going to happen.

This kind of stuff just frightens the horses.

I agree that was not what you would normally expect. I've removed that "feature" in b2 now.

Ok 20.1b2 is out. Here are the changes:
  • Removed ability to multi-paste into focused text fields
  • A "Paste xyx" option added to the items context menu
  • If multiple items are selected when pasting metadata, then a confirmation dialog will show up

Update both jalbum-core and texts.properties to try out b2.

I'll have to leave this until tomorrow, but it's still downright byzantine. I can still paste a title into a comment field, for example.

This doesn't seem like an improvement, to me. This introduces a new level of complexity, and a bunch of opportunities for screwing up. And I'm not at all clear about what the benefit is, for 99.99% of jAlbum users.
