Open project with last used/active element

Hi,

guess you have a spread sheet with 10 sheets. On sheet 8 you have data in rows 1-89,000 and in columns 1-190. The current cell is Row:89,000 and Column:190. You close your spread sheet file. You open your file again. Question: What is the active cell?
[ ] Sheet:1; Row:1; Column:1
[X] Sheet:8; Row:89,000 Column:190

Isn't it?

Now let's adapt that to JA. Open a project with a folder structure like this:
D:\Eigene Dateien\MDrück\Pictures\2019 01 26 Norge\2019 01 26 Hahnstätten - Malmö
                                                  \2019 02 01 Longyearbyen

                                 \2020 01 24 Norge\2020 01 24 Hahnstätten - Hjørring
                                                  \2020 01 25 Hjørring - Vågsli
                                                  \2020 02 07 Malmö - Hahnstätten
                                                  \More\Svalbard\Eiskarten\2019\08\2019 08 14
Now assume you are in the last folder "\More\Svalbard\Eiskarten\2019\08\2019 08 14". You close the project in JA, and reopen it (just using the shortcut <Ctrl><1>), and what is your active element?
[X] "D:\Eigene Dateien\MDrück\Pictures\2019 01 26 Norge\2019 01 26 Hahnstätten - Malmö"
[ ] "D:\Eigene Dateien\MDrück\Pictures\2020 01 24 Norge\More\Svalbard\Eiskarten\2019\08\2019 08 14"

<argh>

Wouldn't it make sense to just jump always to the last active object after opening a project again? Is there a reason a user don't want that happen?

What do you think?

Thanks in advance, Markus

Correct Markus. Lightroom works in the same way.

ACDSee and Notepad++ for example do have options which are similar. So I think my thought is not that unusual. See screen shots.

Doesn't that really annoy more users that after opening an album that they have to travers to the last used folder over and over again. This is something which not is annoying from time to time, it is annoying every time. Thanks for considering to rethink if it would make sense to solve that like quirk.

It could be just as annoying for someone who always wants to add new folders to the root when restarting jAlbum. If your last active object was in edit mode, should it be reopened in edit mode?

Why not always start at the root with the file tree expanded? Then it is only a click or two to get anywhere within the project.

For some projects, the file tree might be taller than the application window - it could take a lot of scrolling to get to the desired target. My own travel site is like that - only one layer deep, but currently 56 folders. It may never get larger, of course, since I won't be able to leave the house again. Ever.

Could be a handy feature. In my family album, I'm almost always heading for Family Site/2020/Stills, to add the latest stuff.

My vote would be for a Preferences > General setting, like remembering the last window position and size: Remember last open folder.

That sounds reasonable, but maybe Settings>Advanced might be a better place? Then you can decide which option to have as a default and then have the other option on specific projects.

Just offering random thoughts as I have no preference either way on this feature.

There's currently nothing in Settings > Advanced that has to do with the behavior of the jAlbum UI. All of those settings are concerned with how the album is created. It should probably stay that way.

That would be the "deluxe" version to have a separate option, so only users who really want to use that feature can enable it.

Have you tried hitting CTRL+Space and then type the location to be taken to? If you remember parts of a file- or folder name, then this is a fast way.

Fast? Not really. It took 19 minutes and 11 seconds to complete the index for 51,000 objects. And what is worse than waiting once more than 19 minutes to complete the index. Everytime I invoke the search again, after closing and reopening the album, it takes again ~19 minutes to build that index.

Under Preferences > Search, did you check both boxes? If so, try unchecking Index metadata - that one is likely to be a beast.
