If I remember correctly, the default in a new installation of jAlbum is unselected until you change the default yourself ("Save as default")
Since I actually want to set the directory locations for new projects myself, I have used "Save as default" to make "selected" the default. If you have inadvertently done this yourself, you can undo and use your preferred setting of "unselected" - this does not require a program change.
You did not comment on the naming convention to the for the .jap.
There is also no need for a program change to be able to use your own "naming convention" for .jap files or to keep them in a separate directory. Just use "Save project as.." to save the settings in a specific location with a specific name. |

I wonder if there is some confusion here about what constitutes a new project?
If you open jAlbum you are effectively already in a new project.
i.e.
1. Open jAlbum.
2. Select a skin.
3. Do whatever you need to select all the program options you want (images, directories, image sizes etc) and skin settings, then save the settings as a new project.
If you open jAlbum without specifying a project, you are already in a new project and do not need to select "New Album Project", just save as when you have picked all your selections, including "Skin".
If you have opened jAlbum with an existing project and you select a new skin, it is surely appropriate that the new skin will apply only to the current project and not to a subsequently selected "New Project". If this is the case, then you should select the new skin AFTER selecting "New album Project".

Per the recommendation in this thread I've adjusted the "Output directory" text field so it displays the path from the root in gray, followed by the relative path you've entered. This last part is displayed in white. As soon as you edit, you'll naturally only see the relative part. As soon as the text field loses focus, it again paints the full path from the root. Do a core update to try it out. What do you think?

The 14.1.7 update also uses the platform's native file chooser for "Save copy as..." and it remembers the last location you saved to.
Oh, this update also speeds up dropping keywords onto multiple album objects and gives better visual feedback while in the process of updating multiple keywords. You can also undo all keyword changes in one go by hitting the undo button.
Finally, and most important, the 14.0.7 update fixes a nullpointer error during 1:st time album builds that was unfortunately introduced in a late auto-update. |

It appears that you've pushed this out as a critical update. Or is there another core update beyond 14.1.7? I'm getting a "not found" message when trying to do a core update, but the now-installed 14.1.7 isn't showing the output directory path mod you're referring to. |

The critical update doesn't include this UI fix. Just do a core update to get that one too. I've fixed so you can do a core update now. |

I've now fixed so this UI fix is also included in the critical update, but if you've already applied it, you have to get a core update to have this fix applied too. I've tested it on all look&feels we support and it seems to behave well.

I updated to version 14.1.7 and next I did select File / New Album project and entered as Album name Test-2
Next I selected via the ‘Add’ button ‘From disk...’, browsed to my images directory ‘D:\Users\Public\Pictures\Test_1’ and selected all images in that directory.
Next I opened the General page, the Image Directory field shows:
‘D:\Users\Andre\Documents\Mijn Albums\Test-2’
which is incorrect, it should be ‘D:\Users\Public\Pictures\Test_1’
and the Output Directory field shows:
‘D:\Users\Andre\Documents\Mijn websites\jalbum.net\TestFotos’
which is not what I expected from your screenshot.
I have no idea where this default output directory comes from, but it is better as your proposed default.
What you proposes as default is basically wrong. The album should never be created in a sub-directory of the images directory.
It is a common practice that the folder structure of a website on your PC mirrors the folder structure of the website on the server,
Take for example my Sandinavia album, the URL is https://www.andrewolff.nl/FotoSerie/Scandinavie/
and the local output folder is
D:\Users\Andre\Documents\Mijn websites\andrewolff.nl\FotoSerie\Scandinavie |

That is incorrect, see screenshot NewAlbum-1.PNG there is no Album Project location!
Why do you force your users to click the ‘More’ text to unveil a Album Project location text box. See screenshot NewAlbum-More.PNG? The new window is hardly larger as the first window!
May I also do a recommendation: Remove the More text and show always the Album Project location text box with the default location!
If you're not happy with the proposed "Output directory", change it to what you prefer and select File->Save as default.
As I explained above, the proposed default output directory is incorrect, all users should change that.
So come with a better proposal, for instance allow users to enter an output root folder like
D:\Users\David\Documents\My_websites\jalbum.net or
D:\Users\Andre\Documents\Mijn websites\andrewolff.nl\FotoSerie\
and propose as default a sub-directory of this root folder with the same name as the image directory. |

I put the great idea to have jAlbum propose a default root folder for new album folders on the todo. The preference panel for this could look like this (sketch):
Album folder default:
[*] Sub folder of Image folder
[ ] Sub folder of path: ________________

... or simply add the following setting under Preferences->Album:
Web files root: _______________
If non empty, future jAlbum projects will default to writing the generated albums files under that root so the full path is web-files-root/albumName

Good idea, but I preferer to use the image folder name instead of the album name for the output sub folder name
My image folder namens contain never spaces, but the album name is for the viewers, so it contains spaces and I don't like spaces in URLs and folder names.
I hope you will show always the image directory text box on the new album form and remove the More link.
And I would use the name Web site root folder:
