Our first public version of the jAlbum for Android app has now been released!

With the app you can
  • create web photo albums for your Premium or Power storage straight from your Android device.
  • upload photos to existing photo albums that have been created with the online web album tool.
  • view your own albums and user-submitted album, listed in Featured, Popular and Recent albums.
  • share the albums using email, SMS, Facebook or any other service you use.

It is available here: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.jalbum.android.jalbum .

Is there something changed with respect to the Beta test version?

I noticed something strange with the captions:

if I do not give a caption for an image, your App displays 'no caption' if I just view the album.
Why is that? Very ugly specially if you don't understand English!
This is unnecessary, if I do not see a caption, I do know that I did not enter a caption!

It is the same version as the latest beta (that was released September 10). That version included numerous fixes to the first beta that was released earlier.

This is only shown when you view your own albums that can be editable, so you know that the pencil next to the text can be used to enter a caption. It's not visible for anyone else.

The text is using the same language as the rest of the gui. Currently English, German or Swedish.

Yeah, the pencil should probably be enough.

Yes indeed and not every photo requires a caption!

I was excited to see this app, until I realized it doesn't help my setup. I publish my own Jalbums from my own server. Today, I use a web browser to access my albums from my server. Are there any plans to enhance the app to allow me to see my own albums on my server?

As long as you add your albums to your jAlbum profile at http://paulbid.jalbum.net/, they will also be visible in the Android app. They are added automatically if you are signed in to the jAlbum desktop software and use its build in file transfer software. If not, you can add them manually by using "Add external album" on your albums page http://jalbum.net/en/users/paulbid/albums .

Does the Android App display albums with subfolders? Or is it like the earlier mobile mode?

It can't create folders, but it can display and navigate in albums with folders that are create using the traditional desktop client.

Thank you for the quick reply. That worked fine. I was not aware of that capability.

One more question. It seems like from the app, I can only share the URL of the folder, not an individual picture. Is that feature going to be available in the future (e.g. send a copy of the picture via text, email, etc.)?

Yes, the app can currently only share albums, since jAlbum is more about a group of photos, than an individual photo. But we actually had a share-button (that did nothing) on the fullscreen page during development of the app, but we removed it due to lack of time. So it might come back in a future version. It's good to know that it's a feature that is asked for.

I am just starting with jAlbum as a replacement for my many albums in Google Picasa Web which Google are killing off on 1 May 2016. jAlbum looks like a much more professional platform for serious photographers! I am really glad to see a jAlbum Android app which seems to work fast, at least in accessing the shared example photographs. I use an Android tablet to review my photos when travelling and then upload to the appropriate album.

What I will really miss though are two features your Android app doesn't have, The first is a simple slideshow function, no need for lots of transition choices, just a variable timer as on jAlbum. The second is a Chromecast function please to cast my pictures to a TV screen.

Thanks!

Thank you for your input. We will keep those features in mind for our next version of our Android app.

Thanks Anders, I look forward to progress. You guys could work with Snapwood Apps who make brilliant Android accessory programs for several photo hosting systems with stuff people ask for such as offline access and excellent performance with Google Chromecast. Brian, the developer is really helpful.

How do you start the creation of an album?

I can't find a 'New album' button and it is also not indicated in the hamburger menu?
