Correct file placement
Posted: 8 May 14, 00:23

I would like to place albums on the first level immediately after my site's domain name so that the resulting URLs are short and relevant. For example, if I had an album called "photos" I would like the link to be www.MyDomainName.com/photos

However jAlbum always seems to nest the output directory within the image directory so I end up with www.MyDomainName.com/photos/album

How do I get round this?

Thanks for any help you can give me on this.

Just upload the contents of the output directory to whatever directory you like on your server. There's no need to upload the image directory that's sitting above it.

So let's say you have an album called mydog. The image directory might be C:\Documents\My Albums\mydog. The album is sitting in C:\Documents\My Albums\mydog\album.

The album consists of an index.html file, subdirectories called res, slides, and thumbs, and maybe some other files and folders, depending on the skin. Upload those files to the mydog subdirectory on your server.

BTW, if you use the built-in jAlbum uploading routine, it takes care of this for you.

Wow, thanks for the super-fast reply!

OK I think I've got it now:

• The Output and Image directories only refer to the local directories held on my computer.
• I now realise that I can change the name of the album from "album" to the name I choose so presumably if I want to assemble albums into a site using a site-building app (I use Dreamweaver) I give the Output directory the name I want the final album to have then just move the resulting folder into the correct position in my local site, ready for editing and uploading?

Although I no longer use Dreamweaver, I still like to keep all my web pages (whether created by jAlbum, Notepad or anything else) in the Dreamweaver "local site", where they are more accessible to the Dreamweave FTP tool or to Filezilla.
It is quite simple to set the Output file (Settings>General>Change directory locations) to the folder that will be uploaded directly to the website.

jimberry's advice is spot on. Renaming the output directory, then copying it somewhere, involves an unnecessary step, and can actually result in jAlbum becoming confused. If you rename album to mydog, then open the saved project again, jAlbum will think that mydog is a folder within the album, and it will create a thumbnail for it, and try to process its contents. Quite a mess.

Better simply to change the output directory to point to where you want the album to land.

I also think it is more intuitive to upload the folder "mylocalsite/mydog" to a folder of the same name in the same position on my remote host, than to upload "the contents" of "xxx/yyy/zzz/album" ;-)

Yup. I have my entire jgromit.com site set up that way on my PC. The demo albums, manual pages, release notes, etc., come from various other spots on the machine, but the outputs are all pointing to a single jgromit directory on the PC. When it's time to upload, I don't even have to think about it - just mark that entire directory, make sure FileZilla is pointing to the right place on the server, and hit Upload.
