jAlbum 40 beta for testing

Our most significant release this year is around the corner now. jAlbum 40 adds AI-backed face detection and recognition and has a rewritten Edit mode.

Read all about it in our blog post:
https://jalbum.net/blog/jalbum-40-find-people-in-your-photos/

New edit mode:
https://jalbum.net/blog/jalbum-40-the-new-edit-view/

Beta installers:
Windows: https://jalbum.net/download/jAlbum-install.exe
Mac (M-series): https://jalbum.net/download/jAlbum-M.dmg
Mac (Intel): https://jalbum.net/download/jAlbum.dmg

Updated Javadocs for developers: https://jalbum.net/api

Tech details: jAlbum stores a database of "faceprints" under .jalbum/faces.bin for each folder, so AI generated data is never stored with the image files and thus doesn't make it to your web galleries either. There is also a central database called people.bin, stored under jAlbum's config folder. This database keeps track of faces you've taught it. A "faceprint" is like a digital fingerprint, technically speaking a 512 dimensional vector. These "faceprints" are fairly expensive to calculate. That's why jAlbum does that work once in the background, then comparing faces for similarity to known faces can be done in milliseconds.

Unsigned app. Can't open.

ETA: I forced it, but others will have trouble with this.

Ah. I've updated the installers now. Install again, then you'll also get an updated area tagging extension (for xmp-based areas). I'll probably eventually integrate this one into jAlbum's edit view.

Once you've activated AI-assisted face recognition. Open a project containing many faces. Now double-click images and confirm/correct the names. As you do this, jAlbum will update its suggestions as well, as it improves its accuracy.

You can now do a few cool things:
1) Open the filter bar and type: "John+Mary" to see images containing both these people, or "John, Mary" to see images of either of them.
2) Select View-Views->By tag. This groups all images by tag. Notice the folder for uncertain images. Open it and confirm/correct there (double-click to open the corresponding image for editing). That's the fastest way to teach the model who is who.

If you like to make a gallery with these grouped people, select "Add view->Tag view".

The first time I opened the set area tags window it was not large enough to fit the text 'Drag to draw a frame...' The remove button overlapped the 'edit it' text. After resizing it is OK until I restart jAlbum. See attached image.

There is an addition file created in the config folder, 'face-folders.txt' which looks to keep track of all folders that have face tags.

The instructions 'Now double-click images and confirm/correct the names.' Presumably this only works if an image already has face tagging applied. But I'm not clear on what you actually mean as double clicking an image just opens it.

In the area tag window you can no longer enter text in the 'Name' field - just above the 'Description' field which is editable.

I'll try my best to explain another problem here:

Take a photo of a person in a project and copy it. Now switch to another project and paste the image. Open this image with the tag area extension and tag the face. Now go back to the original project and open that image with the extension. I get a 'No faces found' message at the top of the window. If I draw a rectangle around the face it is then tagged with the name used for the other image.

I expected the AI to recognise a face and to tag it for me.

Ah, if AI is enabled the name field is read only, you enter the name in the AI tagged text area below the selection region. Turning off AI and it becomes editable again.

Wiki updates, could do with checking for accuracy as I have 'assumed' certain things.

All marked as Beta Feature

Odd. I do exactly the same, and it works. Any difference if you use the face tagging button of the Edit view instead?

Rob, expect some settings / UI components to change a bit. This is a beta after all. As for the area tagging extension: I plan to fully integrate it into jAlbum's Edit mode and dump it as an extension.

No, same result.

Got it now, works on most faces but not on just-Jordan.jpg in the Sample project. The white lines and studs seem to be the problem.

Yes, I know things are more than likely to change but I find it easier to write things as they come along rather than when it is all settled. Smaller chunks are easier to handle, for me anyway.

At the moment if a face is not recognised as such you need to use the extension to tag it. Similarly if you want to delete a tagged area you need to use the extension. As long as that can be done in edit mode it seems a much better way of working.

A conflict in element positions within the Edit window. Problem with previous//exit/next buttons and the face tagging text box. See images, probably an extreme case.

Hi David,

please have a look at that video:

BTW:
“Don’t add AI to jAlbum”,

a user once wrote to me.

Maybe that was me? :-)
