Slides pages not made on first pass

From a cold start, select a "slide page" skin like Atom or Mercury, add a few images, and hit F9, then F12. The slide images are present, but the slide pages are absent. So, slides/mydog.jpg is there, but slides/mydog.html isn't. And the thumbnail is pointing to the image file, not the slide page.
Hit F9 again, and F12 - all is well.
Not sure when this started happening, but I certainly would have noticed it a long, long time ago if it had always been lurking in there!

This goes back in jAlbum versions for almost a year (can't test before that because the skins were modified to deal with views, and blow up when used with versions of jAlbum that predate that).
On the theory that I certainly would have noticed this a long time ago if it had been happening, I suspect that this may have something to do with macOS Golden Gate....

I'm on the trail of this one. My "slide page" skins disable the Pages > Make slide pages checkbox. Then, early in init.groovy, it's forced:
engine.setSlides(true);
It seems as if this isn't taking effect until the second album build. Always worked before, so I'm unclear about why it's failing now on the first pass.
Sure enough, if I add slides=true to hints.jap, the problem seems to vanish. That's no help if the user disables hints, however. I'll need to mull this over....

I may have stumbled on a simple workaround. If I do the forced engine setting in earlyint.groovy instead of init.groovy, that seems to fix the issue. Probably the result of one of those "efficiency" changes of which David is so fond, but that sometimes lay traps for the unwary.
ETA: I've now moved as many of those forced engine settings to earlyinit.groovy as I can, just to be on the safe side. So there's probably no need for the core to address the issue.
But I can't help but wonder when we're going to see the advent of reallyearlyinit.groovy.

This also appears to be fixed.
But might it be good practice to do those kinds of forced engine settings in earlyinit, as a bit of future-proofing?

Remind me again, what do we need you for? You're just expensive overhead.
And in the skins department, I'm also becoming overhead, albeit free, but not really needed anymore.
