Embedding galleries via iframe – feedback and shopping cart questions

Hi everyone,

I’d like to embed my galleries directly into my website using an iframe instead of linking to them externally. Here’s an example:
https://duhlendorf.com/duhlendorfer-galerien/fotogalerien/test/

Could you please check whether the layout and usability work well, including on smartphones? Do you have any ideas or suggestions before I update all my galleries?

I’m planning to remove the additional links to the legal notice, contact details, and privacy policy from the embedded galleries, as these are already available on the surrounding website. Do you see any issues with this?

Will the shopping cart continue to work properly within the iframe? And are the legal details on the surrounding website sufficient, or do they also need to be accessible directly from the gallery or shopping cart?

Thanks for your feedback!

This isn't an iframe; I see this is the original Tiger album, and it works as it should on mobile devices. An iframe will ruin the mobile user experience.

Yes, as expected, the site is unusable on mobiles. If you set the iframe height, the lightbox image and the shopping cart modal window will be centered far below the bottom of the screen.

So would you recommend keeping it as it is?

Do you perhaps have any tips on what I could improve in the current gallery?

I think it’s a shame that I can’t combine the individual galleries, because with several thousand images the gallery becomes too slow.

Or is there perhaps a way to create one larger, combined gallery that remains fast and easy to navigate even with several thousand images?

Naturally, not.

The Iframe element was invented in the age of desktops, but it doesn't provide a useful solution on mobile. Google even penalizes those sites that use iframes by pushing them down in the search results. It applies not just to jAlbum albums, but to any website.

I've seen galleries with 200,000 images work. If you avoid functions like a "tag cloud" sourced from the whole album, the total album size doesn't affect how a folder loads.

Also, on a single page, avoid adding more than 1000 images. That's not a jAlbum limitation, but a generic web design rule. The computer's memory is limited and cannot hold Gigabytes of images. Create subfolders if you'd like to add more.

You can also create an album of the individual albums using "Web locations".

Sorry, I worded that a bit poorly. I was of course referring to the old version: linking the galleries from the Duhlendorf club website, while continuing to manage the galleries externally.

Do you perhaps have an idea whether it would be possible to combine the individual galleries, each containing around 7,000 images, into one large gallery? Or would a gallery with that many thousands of images eventually become too slow?

I’m particularly interested in how this would affect loading on mobile devices. With such a large gallery, would only the images currently needed be loaded on a smartphone, or could the total number of images significantly affect loading times and overall performance?

If you have dozens of these albums, you can still combine them into one single album, but some functions require loading the whole album tree (a.k.a. the database).

The following functions require the whole tree:
  • Search
  • Tag cloud search
  • New images
  • NewImages.htt custom page
All of these load the whole database only when the function starts. The NewImages.htt custom page gathers the new images during "Make album". So even if the album is large, the page loads quickly.

Still, it might take several seconds to load a 10 MB database when needed. Here's an estimate of how long it might take. An average image adds 0.6-1 kB of data, depending on custom caption templates, the number of keywords, and whether certain features are used, e.g., metadata.
Image Count	File Size	Desktop (500 Mbps)	5G (150 Mbps)	4G (30 Mbps)
1,000 0.8 MB ~0.02 sec ~0.06 sec	~0.26 sec
10,000 8 MB ~0.13 sec ~0.45 sec	~2.18 sec
100,000 80 MB ~1.28 sec ~4.28 sec	~21.38 sec

And these are the best-case figures. I'd say the numbers above 10 seconds are problematic. When you go over 50,000 images, you'll hit that limit on 4G mobiles.

The other option is using Web locations; that is, you use it the usual way and add the uploaded album's URL to the "master" album. In that case, the functionality mentioned above will not work. The shopping cart and feedback can collect items only from the actual album.

The last option is using a server-based album software instead of jAlbum. But this would mean starting from scratch.

jAlbum creates albums that run on the visitor's computer. This has several advantages, but also has limits. I'd say if someone wants an album with more than ~100,000 pictures and a site-wide shopping cart and search, a local-based solution isn't the best choice.
