Neptune - all folders content on one page

I guess this is rather a feature request:

Is there a way to display photos inside folders all on just one page? I have a little family album, only a handful of photos per year. I‘d like to see them all on one page, but with a distinctive horizontal line or space and a caption in between. I could certainly fit a fake photo with bold text or so in between, but I‘d prefer to have the thumbs really separated blockwise.

Take a look at Venus, a skin made to do just that:

https://jefftucker.jalbum.net/skins/venus/standard/

The project requirements are, necessarily, a bit strict. No solo objects at the top level, and only one layer of folders. The skin is also missing a few of the Neptune features like background music, maps, metadata, and so on. Not impossible, but i was too lazy to struggle through the process of incorporating them for a low-volume skin like this.

As a skin developer yourself, you'll understand what it took to make this work. The title bar options are virtually identical to those in Neptune, but to get everything onto one index page, I had to ditch almost all of the standard jAlbum template processing, and do all of the tree traversal myself. Poke around in the source code, particularly includes/iterate.inc, to appreciate just how different it is!

Cool, I‘ll have a look.
I like the plain and simple look of Neptune, as I have set it up. And yes - I certainly know what tree traversal means. Gone through it a long time before jAlbum offered it natively …

I had to re-learn it.

Well, a great feature, indeed, and almost perfect, but …
… I‘m absolutely missing metadata (i.e. date/time as image caption) and thumbnail video overlay icons.

Too bad, but thanks for the effort anyway!

Video overlay icons should be there by default, but that seems to be broken. I'll have to poke around a bit to see why.

Let me think about the metadata....

A typo in the common.css (one $ too many!) was screwing up the video overlay. Replace the skin version of that file with the attached.

I'll do a fix release shortly.

ETA: Bug fix release now posted, so patched file removed.

Just to make sure we're on the same page.... In Neptune, you've been going to the metadata tab, choosing Date, and opting to show that in the caption area, right?

Importing that into Venus isn't a big deal, but all the related stuff will take time - UI, user's manual, screenshots, etc. Also, supporting the display of metadata as a popup needs to be brought in, as well. That's not what you want to do, but if I'm copying code from one skin to the other, I need to account for all of that.

Exactly. Above the slide image, the date is displayed, and above that an image counter.

Meanwhile I‘ve inserted custom images just showing the year as text, which looks actually quite nice and not disturbing at all. So no need to hassle. Sooner or later, with a rapidly growing amount of pictures, I‘ll probably have to use the traditional folder solution anyway.

Yes, the "all folders on one page" approach is nice, but gets out of hand pretty quickly when you've got a lot of material. It's easy to end up with endless scrolling.

I'll put the metadata option on the "to do" list. It will keep me off the streets.

That's actually one of the less-messy ones - all the needed coding is already there in both Neptune and Saturn. It's just a matter of bringing it in without triggering other problems. My coding for that kind of stuff is now fairly modular, so I can often get away with some big chunks of "copy and paste." ;)

Venus v. 90.0 now includes the same metadata support that's present in Neptune.

Just one minor puzzlement on the coding - I always forget that when you're doing your own tree traversal, the core isn't helpfully extracting all of the variables from each object, so you end up with a lot of something = vars.get("something") lines. ;)
