Just to play devil's advocate, if you visited Russian, would you use Cyrillic names in your album? How about a visit to China? ;)
Fun fact. Long long time ago (longer 40 years) I've been in the „UdSSR“ (German for „Soviet Union“), „Союз Советских Социалистических Республик“ (Russian). Back than I had no travell blogs :-)

Maybe 10 years ago I dreamed of to take the „Trans-Siberian Railway“. But, because of things happend we all know, I'll never set one foot in this country.

In March 2022, just a view days after that „special event“, I've been in „Баренцбург“ (village under Russian administration on Spitsbergen). The local guide, a young lady told us, that we (the tourists) are from the 21th century, but they live still in the 20th century. Looking at the houses this statement was 100% true.

And guess what, the pictures from „Barentsburg“ are tagged in Cyrillic:

China? No, thanks. Other countries with non-latin-characters? I don't think so.

I suppose the key question is, "Who is the target audience for your site?" Very few people in Western Europe or the Americas can puzzle their way through Cyrillic place names, for example. Very correct and proper, but not very useful.

I'm not sure if I understand you right, but the examples you mentioned are doing exactly what I do too.

I don't think so. The visitnorway.de site calls the country Norwegen. The visitnorway.com site calls it Norway. Neither calls it Norge.

ETA: And visitnorway.fr calls it Norvège.

OK, this is true, the country name is always written in the language from the visitors point of view, only the village names are the local ones. Regarding the names of POIs it's different, some do translate them, some leave them in the original language. I prefere the original ones. Example „Ishavskatedralen“ or „Tromsdalen kirke“, but not the German „Eismeerkathedrale“. If you look at local sign where to drive or walk to the „Ishavskatedralen“, you'll never find a sign with „Eismeerkathedrale“. ;-) That is the reason I like the local names.

I repeat myself, the target audience is: me. :-)

I fully agree with the Cyrillic place names. But I don't agree with the Latin place names.

In Cairo, road signs at the edge of the city often show both the local and latinized names of places, like Saqqara. But once you get a few miles out into the desert, the signs are in Arabic only. The savvy traveler has taken photos of the "two language" signs, so he has at least some hope of being able to figure out the subsequent signs!

The people in my little group also learned Arabic numerals early on. All of the little tour buses look alike, so the only way to find yours (among scores of others) is to read the license plate. ;)

I'd like to see an end to what I call "senseless translations." It's most obvious in places like Italy. Rome, Naples, Florence, Venice? Really? There's nothing difficult about the real names of those cities - there's no earthly reason to "translate" them into English!

Yes, fully agree. Some cities made it, there is no English nor a German name. E. g. „Paris“, „Oslo“. :-)

Seems to make sense to use the local name as well... Perhaps time for yet another option in jAlbum?

Do a reinstall of jAlbum 39.9 now. This will give you the option to use local place names or use the language set in Preferences.

Which version will that cough up? I've seen at least two critical updates in the last two days, neither with any explanation. I'm on 39.9.3 at the moment.

39.9.3 will do, but only a reinstall will also bring you the updated text keys.

This leaves me puzzled. I got a silent update today and I'm on 39.9.3.

I mentioned this in other threads too that a lot of news are very unspecific about how do I use a new feature where exactly do I have to look. What does „This will give you the option to use local place names or use the language set in Preferences“ mean?

When we in our news describe where to look for something new, you can read somethink like that. „Go for "Tools|Preferences“ then in that dialog look on the tab "General" for the option|checkbox|label|what ever called "blah-blah"“ Every user can follow this.

I don't know if I have to update to 39.9 even I already have 39.9.3 or do I miss the new option because I'm blind. :-)

Thanks!

Don't feel bad. I was equally puzzled for a bit. This is the well-known Dor Version Control System™ (DVCS), which is known for stuff like this.

Step one, go to the download page and reinstall jAlbum 39.9. You will, in fact, get 39.9.3, even though you don't find out about that until you launch it.

Where is the setting? Yes, the "search" feature doesn't find it. Create a little test project with a handful of your images. Then add a new "places" view. The setting is there (screenshot).
