It's the Face tag functionality that displays this small text when the screen is small, and the face tag area is also tiny. I'm unsure what to do, as even if you set the font size to an unreadable level, the tags will still display a maximum of 2-3 characters.

I use links to display the tag name outside of the image, clicking on the link highlights the tagged area. The links are normally hidden to give more space for the image, I use a ‘Pin’ icon to show them.
