Inconsistent behaviors with edits and internal links

I'm still seeing some odd problems if I create an internally-linked object, but then edit the linked one so that it's different from the original. Where did we leave that discussion? (Too many things going on, so I lose track.)

Example: apply an "invert" edit to the original image (so that it's really obvious), then create an internally-linked copy of it. Now remove the image edit from the linked copy. You're in no-man's-land at that point, unless you do a Force Remake. That effectively removes the "invert" from the original and its copy, and the Explore display finally shows the unedited image in both locations, and in the album.

There are also some refresh problems here, in which some changes don't appear in Explore without an F5, and some don't even appear until you close and reopen the project.

Also, you can enter a different comment for the copy. The original and its copy continue to show different comments, no matter what you do. But if you do the same thing with the title, the change to the linked copy bubbles up to the original.

I'm not sure what behavior I'd want in all of these cases.

I think that the behaviour we shall strive for is that any edit to an internal link applies to the target.

The beta for 38.0.3 addresses this. I haven't run into any weirdness yet, but this is a messy thing to test. Lots of permutations and combinations!

Indeed. Let's advice against overuse of manual internal linking, I can think of some scenarios...
