Any plans for some add-on to stop greedy AI-crowlers to wolf down images inside of our jA projects ?

It’s a minefield, especially if you use any of the social media platforms or even gmail.
They can, in theory, be blocked by entries in robots.txt, but it might stop your images being found by search engines. Some AI tools may ignore the robots.txt, I think.

Just search the web for ‘opt out of ai’ or ‘how to stop ai from stealing art’. After reading a few articles you might find there is no easy way to do it, other than horrible watermarks making the images useless.

This is just my view, others may have different opinions.

It's up to each AI crawler to respect robots.txt, but we're planning on providing a user interface to simplify maintaining a robots.txt for each website.

This, I believe would, if followed by the AI crawler, only stop AI crawlers from when the robots.txt file is added. Anything already on the web would need to have requests sent to each AI to not use a specific image or text. For an album of 100 images that would require 100 requests per AI.

In the UK the government is trying to let AI firms ignore copyright. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/clyrgv2n190o

This all sounds like a return to the age-old question, "How do I stop people from stealing my images?"

The AI bots, like the more traditional search bots, can simply ignore a robots.txt file. An "are you a human" test can be bypassed by an AI bot that has learned how to mimic the behavior of a human visitor. A test like that ends up not stopping the bots, but also annoying the daylights out of real visitors, who get tired of clicking on squares with motorcycles in them.

The only ways to protect your content are to deface it badly with heavy watermarks, to put your site behind password protection, or not to put your content on the internet in the first place.

And if Google Images has already indexed your site, the images are already "out there."

I think this train has sailed. ;)

If I used AI to summarise my thoughts on this it probably would have come up with ‘This boat has sailed’. Never seen a train sail, yet. ;)

No, that's what I really meant. This is a train that's truly never coming back.

(It is the sort of thing an AI bot, with no experience of the real world, would come up with, isn't it?)
