Hi,

I try to use the attached picture in an album, but this fails:

Camera date cache miss for Mens-Etip-Gloves.webp
java.io.IOException: No image readers found for Mens-Etip-Gloves.webp

Any idea what is wrong here?

I use JA 36.0.4 and Tiger Version 5.13.1

Thanks in advance, Markus

When I try to deal with that image in other image-processing apps, they tell me that the file can't be read. It's not formatted as a valid WEBP image.

If I tell some of those other apps that it's actually an AVIF file, it opens, which suggests that that's actually what it is. jAlbum can't handle AVIF, however. If I let one of those apps convert it to WEBP, it works. Attached.

Just for reference, there is a Java library for AVIF but it needs compiling
https://github.com/umjammer/vavi-image-avif

Was the image from an HP scanner?

If I right-click and "Save image as...," it clearly indicates that it's an AVIF file. If I right-click and "Open image in new tab," it comes up as a JPG.

Not sure how you thought you got a WEBP. :D

I hope the gloves are better than their website and the browser you used ;)
I'm assuming you are invoking 'Fair Usage' of the image?

My browser (Brave) correctly identifies the image as AVIF, whether I choose "Save image as...." or "Open image in new tab."

Intriguingly, Firefox gets it wrong, and thinks that it's WEBP.

ETA: The real problem, of course, is a website that serves up AVIF images. Not universally supported.

I doubt it. I bought them because they are for touchscreen usage and I'll use them to fly my drone. But expecting temperatures lower than -20°C they will not keep your fingers "warm", they'll only protect them to get frozen in 10 minutes, instead of 2 minutes. :-)

I'm not sure if I'm translating that correct to German, maybe there is some irony in your question which I'm not able to read. :-)

Cheers, Markus

Thanks Jeff. Lesson learned, never trust the file extension a browser is serving you.

Maybe this helps https://law.stackexchange.com/questions/51358/what-is-the-equivalent-to-fair-use-in-europe

Fair usage is mainly a term used in the USA to allow use of copyrighted content for specific purposes, like writing a review of a product and including an image of the product owned by the manufacturer. So you don't fall foul of images owned by the like of Getty Images, they are very protective of copyright.
