Menu expansion problem

A small problem, but very noticeable. When the visitor expands one of the sidebar menu entries, the entire thumbnail table jumps sideways. Expand the F1 entry here:

What would be the preferred way of working? Making the sidebar wider, or letting its content scroll horizontally?

I'm not sure what the best solution would be. There's almost no way to predict how wide the sidebar is going to need to be to contain the content. Horizontal scrolling would be very ugly.

I never could figure that out, which is why I used a lightbox for my menus. :)
