Indexed sort based on custom (keys) in file names

Hi,
I have been thinking about an indexed sort option for jAblum. In our collections the 'asset' is a piece of hardware with images, pdf and other support documents. For our previous application, we used to embed keys (short mnemonic codes in parenthesis) in the filename and provide a sort-list for these codes.
For example files would be sorted in this order:1) 'HauptBild': file1(item).jpg (jAlbum's folder image), 2) The_odd_file.jpg, 3) advertisement: file2(ad).gif, 4) manual: file3(man).pdf etc. if the sort list was: "(item),(catch-all),(ad),(man)".
The (catch-all) key refers to undefined keys or if none existed, multiple docs under one key are allowed, like (ad2) which would fall between (ad) and (man). Within each key the files are sorted by name.

I believe this could be a very flexible sorting tool and helps in a case like our collections to show a consistent image/document sort order. I realize there are many ways to sort in jAlbum, but with meaningful mnemonics and a custom sort order this could add another great option.

I wonder if others feel the same and how one could implement something like this in jAlbum - not that we have the time for it now...

Not sure if you want to sort the project files and/or the album. But maybe the keywords field would be better than long, complicated, file names that could end not being web safe.

Most use simple file names, often those produced by the camera.

Rob,
thanks for pointing this out. An indexed search like I proposed could also be done on the keywords - the table defining the order of keywords.
I still like to have the option to code the key within the filename and to avoid potential special character issues, the keys could be introduced by dash? For example: DSCF3210--item.jpg
