WebP image quality is awful

Not sure when this went bad, but the current WebP image processor is so bad, it should be withdrawn from the app.

Using jAlbum 30.3.b3, and a sharp original that's 3843x2579, I generated a 1200x900 bounded slide image both with JPG and with WebP, default quality settings. In the WebP image, notice the blockiness in the clouds. Nothing subtle about it - truly horrendous.

The only way to improve it is to crank up the quality setting for WebP, but it doesn't become presentable until the slide image file size is actually larger than the corresponding JPG image, so there's no point using WebP. The only theoretical advantage of WebP is that the files are smaller.

I second that. For a couple of month - some time ago - I used WebP and variants. Then I got my first glasses in my life and realized that a lot of slide pictures, not all, looked bad. I went back to JPG.

And the default size for slides in the Sample Project of "1000x800" is just way to small. Combined with the extreme bad quality of the sample pictures
Jpeg.Image Height=1499 pixels
Jpeg.Image Width=2000 pixels

this results in a horrible looking album. This is really not a good advertisement for jAlbum. But maybe this is OK for most users who are looking at albums on smartphones and tablets...

I'm virtually certain that it used to be better, but I believe the image processor under the hood has been changed, and the newer one is doing a very poor job, I'm sorry to say.

I agree that the current WebP processor (produced by IDR solutions) isn't as good as the initial one we used. We moved to it from a pretty good open source alternative because the open source alternative didn't compile for Apple's M1 architecture. I'm getting updates from the team that is making the new WebP processor that they will soon address this problem, unfortunately it seems to take more time than I could have ever imagined.
