Split from this thread, which was subjected to what I can only call a "moderators' hijack!"

You might be a bit premature in ruling out dementia. Then again, I'm more worried about my own at this point. Might this thread have some relationship to Tom Cee's old SimpleXBF filter? I just played a little bit with it and in that very narrow test it "worked" with jA 28.1.6 see sample truXBF attached. Don't know if would work here, but if one is adventurous . . .
There may actually be another version of SimpleXBF around the Forum. I just grabbed the first one I found and started pressing buttons.
Edited by: mrag on 1 Aug 2022, 14:12 I grabbed the first image in a test album to sample XBF. According to Snopes, the quote used in the image is "misattributed." Boo hoo

I had forgotten about that one! OK for multiple simple borders, but it doesn't look like it can handle multiple shadows.

I don't know why SimpleXBF went out of general use. I recall one particular user, a big supporter of Blu Plus Plus, went off the deep end using it to make all sorts of "frames" (borders?). Many were quite creative and it was surprising what could be generated. If only I could remember his name, he might have included samples on a forum post. Like 10-12 years ago?
I don't know about making 'multiple shadows' although if one is driven enough and resourceful enough, you may be able to get close.
If someone is game enough, download SimpleXBF.jaext and put it in the jAlbum/ext folder and then right click on a thumbnail image in explore view and you should see the Simple XBF option. (I hope that's correct). Fun, fun, fun at no extra charge

I don't know why SimpleXBF went out of general use.
I suspect it's because web page styles have evolved, and fancy, multi-layered borders have fallen out of fashion. Even 15 years ago, I knew a semi-professional photographer who said that he didn't want a bunch of borders taking attention away from the images he was trying to present. I think more and more users have come around to that opinion.
The other thing that's never really taken off were some of the borders I experimented with years ago - blur border, pixelated, frosted glass, and added noise (attachments BB, PX, FG, and AN).

A few more examples I still had kicking around. The letters in the file names indicate the type of border.

Oh, come on, put all your samples on a single web page (album) for easier viewing. You could even use Atom
I agree on using (or not) frames, etc. The simpler the better although there may be applications where they fit or are just fun to use. SimpleXBF is a tool. BTW, I get no commission for promoting it.

Looks like a simple file location/permission problem. In fact, in TomCee's original source code, there's a line that identifies a defaultDirectory, followed by a comment, by Tom, of "correcte plaats?" Even he wasn't sure about where it should land.

It doesn't work in the config's ext folder, nor jAlbum's ext folder. Double clicking the plugin and letting it install itself doesn't work either. The file has read/write permission for me.
From memory it stopped working on my Mac many years ago.

For me, it works just fine. I manually stashed it in the config/ext directory. But in Windows, it saves its .ini file in the program directory, top level, rather than the config directory, which would make more sense.
On the Mac, while it works, it throws an error when it tries to save values to its .ini file, which appear to try to retain the settings you had the last time you used it. So, not really a big deal. It still has no problem writing out the generated filters to the user variables setting in the project.

Not a problem for me as I don't use it anymore.

It's like taking a trip in Mr. Peabody's WABAC Machine.
For users thinking about tarting up their images with these kinds of borders, frames, and brackets, I have one piece of advice: Resist the temptation.
