I'm retiring the
Mars skin. I developed it primarily to produce slide pages in which the caption area is separate from the image frame, an effect I first used in
Matrix, and that I've always thought was visually appealing. I have now incorporated that option into both
Neptune and
Saturn, so there's no need to maintain another skin for it.
This has also allowed me to solve a longstanding issue in
Neptune and
Saturn. It's a long story, but in short, the underlying Floatbox display script handles things like the play/pause and close icons, but the skin needs to plant its own icons somewhere, for things like metadata, maps, and downloads. Neither can "invade" the other's space. This created a problem, seen in the attached
before.png image. I have now changed these two skins so that they handle
all of the icons themselves. That let me, at long last, put the icons where they belong, seen in the attached
after.png image. I had to sacrifice a few of the more elaborate caption and icon positioning options, but it was worth it. I hope users of
Neptune and
Saturn agree.
You may certainly continue to use
Mars indefinitely - it won't stop working. But if you want to convert an existing
Mars project to
Neptune, it's usually fairly easy. See this little write-up:
