I know when building a jAlbum I have the ability to rate images and then sort the list by rating (see attached image). In addition, however, we really need something similar for visitors to the web gallery to rate images.
For example, when you have hundreds of similar images in a gallery (such as a wedding, or a portrait session, or a product shoot) it's difficult for clients to make buying decisions. They can't remember which images they liked best and which they eliminated. A simple 1-5 star rating system would be extremely helpful. Their rating doesn't need to be reported to the photographer or shared with others. The purpose would be to simply help the client narrow down their selections.
They would need the ability to quickly rate the images on a 1-5 scale on both the thumbnail display and the lightbox display plus the ability to then filter the list based on rating to show only their "keepers". They could gradually rate the pictures until they narrowed it down to the best of the best for their final purchase.
I suspect this enhancement would be popular for anyone who sells images that are similar in appearance. Thank you for considering this suggestion. Photoblogger is AWESOME!!!
Yes, it would be somewhat similar to the checkbox already available for the feedback functionality but instead of a boolean checkbox the variable would hold a numeric rating that could be used for filtering.
I'm doing more product shoots with multiple images that are very similar. The ability for clients to rate and filter images would really help me out. Currently they can't narrow their selections so they struggle.
I'd buy you a beer if you could add this enhancement!!!
Any chance this enhancement is reaching the top of your list? The ability for clients to rate pictures in order to narrow their selection is important for those of us who shoot large numbers of similar images (portraits, products, etc).
I see how important it is for you - and I promise this feature will be added ASAP -, but now we need to prioritize developments that bring us more users and revenue. (I'm now into releasing a new skin, and renewing the site.)
You seem to be tweaking the filtering functions on PhotoBlogger. Any chance this request for the ability of users to rate images with stars and filter their selection is bubbling up to the top of your enhancement list? This would be a huge help when users are trying to make purchase decisions when there are similar images in the library.
First, thanks for adding Visitor Rating. That should be very helpful as clients narrow their selection but I have a couple questions.
1) Initially, all of the ratings on every picture are set to zero which is great. If the user accidentally rates one of the photos, how do they reset it to zero again? Once rated, I don't see a way to remove the rating. The lowest it goes is one star after it's been rated the first time. Adobe Bridge uses a null symbol to reset the rating (see attached image) but you might have a better option.
2) I'm struggling with Sorting and Filtering based on rating. I'm using visitorRating as my variable name and I've tried all of the different variable types but no luck. I also have a fileName filter and that seems to be working without any issues but not the rating.
The variable is simply called "rating". If you rate the pictures in jAlbum that will be displayed as default rating in the album. I'll try to invent something to be able to remove the rating. However, I thought rating 1 means the lowest value, and 0 is just uninitialized.
Thanks Laza. Using the variable name of "rating" seemed to work for filtering
And yes, any ratings previously assigned by the photographer are the used as the default ratings when the album is created. Every time the user returns to the gallery they see the photographer's default ratings which might be a little confusing. I'd prefer to publish a gallery with zero ratings on everything but I can't find a way to do that. Since I use linked images, if I reset to zero rating within the jAlbum links it also resets the rating of the real image. I don't want that for sure. It would be nice if there was an option to ignore previous ratings and publish the gallery with no initial ratings. Just something to think about.
In regard to a visitor's need to reset their rating to zero, the base jAlbum it uses numbers inside each star from 0 to 5. Maybe something like that would work for you instead of a 1 to 5? Just brainstorming.
I was looking for a way to remove the existing ratings from a gallery before it's published. I know within JAlbum I could select all of the images and remove the rating, but that also removes the ratings from the linked originals and I don't want to lose my ratings. I use those ratings on the original files to flag images for my business website and publications.
I just want a clean unrated gallery when it's published so I was hoping there would be an XML file I could edit with a simple FIND/REPLACE to remove the rating number within the gallery but I'm not seeing anything like that. The only place I see a rating number is within the header of the low resolution JPG that Jalbum produces. Changing it there would require editing hundreds of individual files.
Any suggestions on how to generate a clean album where all the Visitor Ratings begin as zero stars?
