jAlbum 19.2b1 for testing
Posted: 03-Dec-2019 13:34
jAlbum 19.2 is about to be released any day now. This is a minor update that has the following changes:
  • New "Duplicate project" function that makes a copy of an existing project but without any ties to any published project
  • "File->Save project as" replaced by "File->Duplicate project" ("Save as" was a recipe for disaster as it only copied the project file and not the project itself.
  • Improved cache handling during preview via the embedded web server
  • Better handling of broken images
  • Fixed coordinate bug for face tags for portrait oriented images
  • Various minor bug fixes
  • Updated bundled skins

Installers:
Windows: http://jalbum.net/download/jAlbum-install.exe
Mac: http://jalbum.net/download/jAlbum.dmg
Any system: http://jalbum.net/download/jAlbum.zip

In this version, how does one save a project file with a different name, instead of jalbum-settings.jap?

There's one other little trap when duplicating a project, and I'm not sure what I'd want jAlbum to do about it. If the original project has its output directory set to some location outside of the project, rather than the relative album location, the duplicated project is now pointing to the same output location. Maybe some kind of warning when this condition is detected?

Since I always keep my project files, image files and output(album) files in separate directories with project-specific names, "Save as" was ideal for me, NOT a "recipe for disaster".
However, I can still do the copies in a file manager, so if it is deemed unwise to retain that "Save as" capability, it still won't be a "recipe for disaster" in my case, just a slight inconvenience.

??? I used “Save as” a lot and had never a disaster! But I save my project file always in the Image directory.
Every program which saves data do have a “Save as” function, I don’t think you should remove that function!

Maybe a change to the menu name is all that is needed, so it reads 'Save (project?) settings as…'

I hear you. I've re-added "Save project settings as..." and fixed the issue with the album directory pointing to the old project's location. All at http://jalbum.net/download/beta/jalbum-core.jar

That's better. :)

I was just thinking that in all of the lifeboat.zip files I've grabbed while trying to solve user mysteries, I'd guess that about one-third of them had a nonstandard project settings file name, so lots of people use that.

Putting the output directory back to the default location when you duplicate a project is a good choice. There's no way the core could guess where it should be, and leaving it set to a location outside of the project would just be asking for trouble.

Sorry but I'll wait for a dmg, zip versions are not friendly enough under the Mac's tighter security regime.

Brill!
Would it be best to not include the 'album' folder in the duplicate? It could have lots of unwanted files if a different skin is used, not to mention a lifeboat.zip with the original settings.

That's probably a good idea. I've now updated the beta core file to ignore any embedded album, i.e. it's only the project that's being copied as the name says.

Is it possible for this update to tidy up any project's res folder, by that I mean for subfolders not to have the folder properties panel and to disable the 'use as thumbnail' option? Certainly not a major issue, it is just a bit incongruous.
