Add ability to watermark images, slides, thumbnails

Depending how you use the skin, it would be GREAT to choose which images you'd like to have watermarks on in the effects panel.

For instance, in Lightflow, because the thumbnails are large, it would be beneficial to watermark them.....
The skin had the ability to do it in its filter section but had a problem then with the effects panel in jAlbum so he is eliminating it.

Can you please add it? I've been told by others that you could do it and that others would like it too.

Agreed, an option to apply image filters not only to slide but also to thumbnail images would be nice!

With Minimal skin, I can use the old standard filters (by applying them in User Variables) to create watermarks in thumbnails, closeups or both, with different text (or none) for each image - by setting the watermark text to use an image variable.
This doesn't seem to work with LightFlow, however. Does LightFlow specifically disable the old style filters?

Yes, precisely - but kaya is in the process of stripping out that logic, because of conflicts with the Effects panel. See this thread: http://jalbum.net/forum/thread.jspa?threadID=50693

So everything asked for in this post will be already available in those restored oldstyle filters.

However, I believe there is still a case for rationalising the two filter methods so that everything available in the old "all images" filters (e.g. the option to apply to thumbnails) is available for the "single image" effects, and the "all images" filters can be applied with a user interface as friendly as the "Effects" UI.

Yes. I thought that was obvious.

The Effects panel UI is light years better than the raw filters, with their sometimes obscure command-line attributes, and the need for trial and error to figure out what the result will look like. This is simply a request to add a couple of checkboxes to those panels for slides and thumbnails.

Extending everything from the Effects panel to the same functions in image-editing mode would be a nice plus, but might be a tall order. There's not a lot of screen real estate in that right pane. But the preview certainly isn't as good in image-editing mode - it would be nice to have that match what the Effects panel provides.

I agree it would be consistent to provide the same effects as image tools too so one can apply them on an image-by-image basis. It may happen but isn't currently on the top 10 list.

Understood. But how about a couple of checkboxes on the main Effects panel, one for slides and one for thumbnails?

I've been thinking about adding that, but can't really see the need with the currently available effects. Each effect has defaults that are natural for that type of effect. For instance, the text and logo effects apply to closeups only while the rest applies to both image types. Would you ever want it differently?

You CAN actually control what image types the effects apply to by entering Settings->Advanced-User variables. Here you'll see the resulting syntax for your effects. Copy one row and paste a new row. I for instance ensured that the text effect is applied to both closeups and thumbnails by pasting the following user variable:

filter2=thumbnails="true" class="net.jalbum.filters.TextFilter" text="David"

This also allows the possibility to apply differently sized text to thumbnails. Add the attribute prescale="true" to have this additional effect/filter applied before the scaling to thumbnail size.

Well, I'll let those to whom this is important chime in. I've never been a fan of trying to put text or logos on thumbnails - they're fairly small to begin with.

Unrelated, but I'm puzzled - under Effects > Auto, why is Auto Colors always grayed out?

Some thumbnails are fairly large so in that instance I would prefer a watermark.

I don't understand how to do the variable for this. Can you help me understand it better?

Just add the text watermark to the closeup images using Settings->Effects, then go to Settings->Advanced->User variables. You will now find a row there saying something in line with:
filter1 / closeups="true" class="net.jalbum.filters.TextFilter" text="Some text here"
Make a copy of that row (right click and choose "copy") and paste the row to a new row which you edit so it reads:
filter2 / thumbnails="true" class="net.jalbum.filters.TextFilter" text="Some text here"
There you go. Now your text effect is applied both to thumbnails and closeup images.

Some screenshots will probably help.

First, put your watermark stuff on the Effects tab: ss001204.

Now go to the Advanced > User Variables tab, and you'll see this: ss001205

Add a filter2, copy and paste the actual filter info, change closeups to thumbnails, and add prescale=true: ss001206
