I have a few links in my album. Sometimes the pages they link to change or disappear. I want to make a link to a saved/cached copy of those pages like Google does. Does anyone know how I can do it? I am using a Mac, if that makes a difference.
There is a link to a cached version of the same page. The cached page is entirely contained on my own site. This took a long time. I had to convert many links from relative links to absolute ones. I was able to start with something created by a website downloading program, but it was still a lot of work. Does anyone know of a good piece of software or a better way?
I assume that the pages that you are linking to belong to friends and you have their permission to use the archives on your site.
If that is so, why not just use the images to create a new album with JAlbum?
I hate it when a page I've got a link to disappears. I want to cache them. I know it's a lot of work for little return, but that's ok. Take a look at the page linked above and you should see what I mean.
As far as permission goes, I guess that's questionable. I have permission from my friends to cache their stuff. In general, if a page is posted then don't I have the right to cache it? I know a webauthor can mark a page not to be cached and that Google honors that request. I will probably follow similar guidelines.
Since Na Ala Hele have a copyright notice on their page, I guess you should at least have their permission before making a cached version available from your site.
If they update the site (e.g. to amend obsolete or incorrect information), would you know to update your archived version?
If, on the other hand, you have an agreement with them to "mirror" their site, then the agreement would presumably include a mechanism for updating.
Truthfully, I wouldn't want to update my cached version if they updated theirs. The idea is to have a record of the information we had on hand when we did the hike, same as if I printed out the pages and kept them in a book.
