Coding is fun these days: That specific bug was introduced by AI coding. I suspected that AI had ignored the crop region of cropped images and pointed that out to AI, which fixed its own bug. The question remains why AI made that bug in the first place...

One more tidbit.... This appears to occur only with Mac CoreGraphics. Using Windows HQ Cubic works properly.
